https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=816611 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=816611#c0 Summary: long lasting data transfer from or to usb device makes desktop freeze Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cupra2@gmx.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 SeaMonkey/2.17 If I transfer data from or to an USB device and there are a lot of data to transfer or USB device is very slowly that this transfer need a lot of time, desktop is freezing after a while. I tested this at two computers with very different hardware. The result was exactly the same. Also I tested with three different USB devices. 1st USB HDD ( ~ 25 MB/s ) 2nd microSD card in a Garmin GPS device ( ~ 1.7 MB/s ) 3rd compact flash card in a camera ( ~ 0.8 MB/s ) For the following tests I used the slowest device. At first I copied data by using of Dolphin and did measure time until desktop freezing. 1st test: 12 minutes 27 seconds 2nd test: 12 minutes 17 seconds 3rd test: 12 minutes 23 seconds Then I did this test once again by using of Konqueror. 1st test: 12 minutes 00 seconds After freezing of desktop sometimes session will terminated automaticly and switched back to login screen. Always it is possible to switch to a text console and to shut down computer. Once I got a kernelpanic error message during shut down. I'm using openSUSE 12.3 ( i586 ) KDE 4.10.00 "release 1" kernel-desktop 3.7.10-1.1.1 This error is any time reproducible. Always it is possible to switch to a text console and to shut down computer.
Sorry for this bad translation. I'm meaning switch to tty1 by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After reboot I found an error message in /var/log/messages log file. See attachment. Perhaps it's helpful. 3rd: I tried on another computer to copy data. Operating system at this computer was Mageia 3 and used kernel 3.8.13-desktop586-1.mga3 KDE 4.10.2 After approx 12 minutes of copying system froze totally. I was very surprised. Screenshot see attachment. -------------------------------- I guess it's a KDE bug. Could somebody test this at another graphical environment please ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
