In rare cases other IRQs get disabled. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: stefan_braunsforth@t-online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 The system sends kernel message 'disabling IRQ16'. This happens randomly some time after system start (time is varying), sometimes it does not happen at all. After the report two CDROM drives attached to my SCSI controller cannot be used anymore. I cannot map this message to any action I take, it seems to be uncorrelated with my user actions. My Hardware : Mainboard : Asus P8P67 Rev.3.0 Graphics card : Gainward GeForce GF520GT1024MB DDR3 SCSI controller : Adaptec AHA2940 BIOS 1.23 (also tried AF2940U, BIOS 1.16) IDE controller : DELock 89149 Parallel printer adapter : Digitus DS33010 (SUN1888 chipset) Disks : 2*WD Caviar Blue WD20EARX (2TB) SATA, 1*WD Caviar Blue WD1600AAJB (IDE) CDROM drives : Plextor Ultraplex 40max CDROM, Plextor PXW40 CD-writer, both SCSI drives, attached to the SCSI controller. LG GH22NS70 DVD-writer, SATA I have a dual boot with Windows XP, using GRUB. Windows works well with the SCSI system and with the drives, so I can exclude hardware damage. Suse also works well with the SCSI sysem (besides another bug with the CDROM), until the IRQ gets disabled. Suse 11.4 is updated with the latest online updates. using the command 'procinfo' from commandline reports that IRQ16 is linked to aic7xxx, the adaptec2940 driver. Suse hardware info reports all CDROM drives. All drives can be accessed by the system before IRQ16 is disabled. Drivers are : /dev/sr0 : LG DVD writer /dev/sr1 : Plextor Ultraplex 40max CDROM /dev/sr2 : Plextor PXW40 CD-writer I have tried to eliminate hardware IRQ conflicts by installing the slot cards in the mainboard such that the adaptec2940 does not share IRQ with any other installed slotcard. This was possible (referring to the IRQ sharing table in the mainboard manual), but it did not help. Plugging the 2940 into another PCI slot changes the IRQ mapped to the driver. Then the new IRQ gets disabled... In very rare cases the system disables other IRQs, not the SCSI IRQ. So, probably the problem is not directly related with this SCSI system, but a general problem in the kernel. Many usergroup entries in the internet about disabled IRQs also point into this direction. Overheating of any card can be excluded as a root cause. The problem also appears when PC runs open (w/o cover), and it sometimes happens very soon (2minutes) after system start. And I have verified it, nothing gets hot. SCSI card + drives worked well in my old system with Suse 10.x I have two of the Adaptec 2940 cards that differ slightly in board-Rev and BIOS. The problem exists with both cards. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Just run the system for a while. Some time after start of the system the IRQ gets disabled. No specific time, no specific user action is required. 2. 3. Actual Results: No more access to my SCSI CDROM drives. Even YAST hardware info hangs, if started, very likely when trying to access the SCSI system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
