[Bug 489133] New: YaST2-Samba: NetBIOS name is empty by default

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489133 Summary: YaST2-Samba: NetBIOS name is empty by default Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: serge@stroobandt.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0 FirePHP/0.2.4 This afternoon I upgraded my principal Linux machine from OpenSUSE 10.3 to 11. After the upgrade I was no longer able to connect to the machine from a Windows XP machine via SMB. The net use command on Windows gave me system error 1311. Google found me lots of posts asking about problems very similar to mine. None of the posts had any replies, some were as old as 2005! The full error message is System error 1311 has occurred. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I first checked the Samba configuration through the Samba server configuration tool in YaST. All appeared correct. Then I took a deeper dive with SWAT, the web browser based Samba configuration tool, everything looked correct. I checked the firewall configuration: the port for smb was open, set by the YaST Samba Server configuration tool. I stopped the firewall. I stopped the firewall on the Windows XP machine. Each attempt to connect to the Linux machine gave system error 1311 to the net use command, or a less informative message using Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer. I looked again in the YaST Samba Server configuration. On the Identity tab there is a field for NetBIOS host name that was not filled in. You get dire warnings if you put anything in the field. Since connection to the machine was already broken, I decided to put the host name in the NetBIOS name field... bingo! I can now connect to the Linux machine from the Windows XP machine. I had not had to provide a netbios name for Samba on any earlier version of SuSE Linux, which I have been using since 8.0. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: NetBIOS name in YaSY-Samba Identity is left empty. Expected Results: NetBIOS name in YaSY-Samba Identity should equal the Hostname by default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

By default it is the same as the first component of the host´s DNS name. If a machine is a browse server or logon server this name (or the first component of the hosts DNS name) will be the name that these services are advertised under. If you don't enter anything, samba should use your hostname so, either the hostname or samba configuration is broken after upgrade. It's intentional, that the NetBIOS Hostname entry is empty in YaST. component 'YaST' --> 'Samba' -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
