[Bug 849039] New: Do we need a section for upgrading systems using BtrFS for the system disk
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849039 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849039#c0 Summary: Do we need a section for upgrading systems using BtrFS for the system disk Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: ke@suse.com ReportedBy: Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com QAContact: coolo@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/30.0.1599.101 Safari/537.36 In the release notes I don't see any reference to systems using BtrFS as the system disk (ie. for /usr). Due to BNC#835695 a non-patched 12.3 release will fail to upgrade via zypper dup in some circumstances. Jeff Mahoney said he would address it: http://markmail.org/message/nfiwsnvfgdhthcsj I don't know if it was addressed. If not, the best workaround is to download the ISO and upgrade via DVD. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install a vanilla OS 12.3 with /usr being BtrFS 2. Install the ImageMagick package 3. attempt upgrade to 13.1 via zypper dup -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I followed the discussion on factory (linked to in my first message) which ended with Jeff Mahoney saying the generic problem needed a kernel and userspace update deployable via zypper patch. Thus even if the ImageMagick RPM was fixed not to trigger the max hardlinks issue, the issue still potentially exists for other packages. I'm not aware of an automated test update that installs all potential 12.3 packages prior to attempting a zypper dup. I suspect Jeff M is the best one to answer if a note in the release notes is warranted or not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The big thing was that I could deal with the risk of changing an interface before 13.1 was released but we couldn't introduce that change into 12.3 until it was settled. I've been prodding the linux-btrfs list to agree on the interface and it looks like we're pretty much there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Like "if you are using btrfs make sure to x, y, z before running zypper dup?" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I can add the ioctl/sysfs patches to 12.2 easily enough if that's what we want to do. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thus unless it too gets backported to 12.2, I don't see the point in backporting this fix. Just explicitly say that zypper dup upgrades from releases prior to 12,3 are known to be problematic and are not recommended. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
