[Bug 290918] New: Install Warning about partition / home being nearly exhausted using BIOS RAID drives
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=290918 Summary: Install Warning about partition /home being nearly exhausted using BIOS RAID drives Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: AutoYaST AssignedTo: ug@novell.com ReportedBy: jason.d.gaston@intel.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- When installing OpenSuSE 10.3 Alpha 5 to an Intel ICH9 SATA BIOS RAID set (RAID0), I get a Warning popup that states "This disk space in partition /home is nearly exhausted. Continue with the installation? Yes/No". I used a custom partion setup and unchecked the box for creating a seperate /home partition. As there is no /home partition, this error looks to be false. If I click Yes, the install continues. This was found on an Intel ICH9R based system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just tested an installation on a Promise MBFastTrak133 Lite (PDC20276) which is supported via dmraid with RC2 and it worked fine. Support for BIOS Raid is dependent on the the program dmraid being able to cope with the raid metadata of the controller and on linuxrc loading the right kernel modules for the controller. See also #328388 which might be caused by the same problem. Could you also check if your BIOS RAID metadata is still valid (by e.g. booting from Alpha5 and check if the RAID is still detected OK there) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The RAID metadata is detected, but it does not setup up the device mapper device. The strace shows: ioctl(4, DM_VERSION, 0x62b0d0) = 0 ioctl(4, DM_DEV_CREATE, 0x62b1b0) = 0 ioctl(4, DM_TABLE_LOAD, 0x62b180) = -1 ENXIO (No such device or address) ioctl(4, DM_DEV_REMOVE, 0x62b0d0) = 0 while it shows on a working dmraid system: ioctl(4, DM_VERSION, 0x62b150) = 0 ioctl(4, DM_DEV_CREATE, 0x62b250) = 0 ioctl(4, DM_TABLE_LOAD, 0x62f2c0) = 0 ioctl(4, DM_DEV_SUSPEND, 0x62b190) = 0 I just got a ICH9R machine, so I am still investigating this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Now I tried this with a RAID1 setup and it worked, switching back to RAID0 configuration it worked, too. I cannot reproduce the failure now. Jason, can you boot into the rescue system and start dmraid manually and check why it fails to detect or setup the device? 1. Check if dmraid detects the metadata with dmraid -r and dmraid -s -ccc 2. Check if dmraid succeeds to setup the device mapper dmraid -ay and after that dmsetup ls -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I move the intact RAID set to the ICH9 system, it also works. I noticed that LVM volumes that showed up in the failing case above are not listed in the RAID set I created on ESB2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am now able to see the dmraid volumes in recovery mode and the LVM volumes are gone. Somehow dirty drives (with old LVM data on them) are causing this problem. Now, when I try a regualar install, on ICH9, the RAID volumes show up. I get strange default partion numbers (part1, part5, part5, part7, part8), but it works. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
