[Bug 221217] New: Update breaks X11 display on unusual monitor resolution
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221217 Summary: Update breaks X11 display on unusual monitor resolution Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kkaempf@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com The syslinux bootloader doesn't support 1680x1050 resolution, so I chose 1280x1024 and ran 1st phase of update in framebuffer mode. After rebooting and entering 2nd phase, X11 started with an unrecognizable screen. - my old X11 configuration had nvidia and 1680x1050 This combination should be detectable and handled better. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'm pretty sure you know that it is not possible to automatically update the binary nvidia driver do you ? so you suggested to handle an update from a binary driver to a non binary driver better. Great idea... how do you think this should be possible ? using binary drivers is your own risk and an update process cannot take care for that if it is not allowed to handle the driver update as well. I'm pretty sure you had a reason for using the binary driver, because the opensource driver doesn't work or doesn't provide what you want. And this should now be handled better... put Stefan to CC -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221217 ------- Comment #12 from ms@novell.com 2006-11-20 08:47 MST ------- I think one issue we all agree is that it is impossible to migrate an existing binary driver based config to a comparable opensource variant. This means converting nvidia based configurations to nv or fglrx based to radeon would create more problems than solutions According to this the only way I see is the one you suggested already. Turning into a new "safe" configuration. This can be easily done by - calling "sax2 -r -a" at a specific stage in YaST. - or relink the xorg.conf.install file (fbdev) to xorg.conf But I doubt this is what customers want. Even if the original file is available as a .saxsave people will argue why we "remove" their xorg.conf. I'm quite unsure if any action concerning the file would be correct. I think a useful unmistakable message while updating should be enough. Installing the binary driver requires some user interaction so the user is used to that if he wants the binary driver. The only thing which needs to be clear to the user is that he needs to take care for the driver in the same way as before as soon as the update finished. Additionally the quality of the binary drivers is not the best which means starting X with another driver could influence the binary driver in such a bad way that you have to deal with several annoying problems (no console, machine crashed, etc...) Referring to that I think runlevel 3 is the best starting point to update to a binary driver. But this is only a personal note -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

After a system update usually the dummy nvidia driver (=nv driver) is active with its known limitations: - no 3d support - no multihead support - configured DVI resolutions supported only when also supported by the Video BIOS - ... You told us, that "X11 started with an unrecognizable screen". This means, that the nv driver is broken for your NVIDIA gfx chip. I make sure in %postun of the x11-video-nvidia (when package is uninstalled!) that the previous (non-nvidia based) configuration is restored or if this one does not exist a completely new one is created via Sax2. This means that you had a non-working configuration or no configuration at all before you switched to NVIDIA. Anyway, we should mark your NVIDIA GPU as unsupported, i.e. to use with fbdev only. Please attach the output of "hwinfo --gfxcard".
