When you start a new session it should use the provided geometry. If you connect to an existing session, you still have to use "xrandr --auto" to adjust the resolution of the remote desktop. xrdp should be fixed to use the provided keyboard layout when creating a new session. The general problem with having the geometry and keyboard updated as you connect to an existing session is that your connection might not be the only connection. The geometry problem should be handled by some RANDR daemon/gui that is needed for general display output hotplug support. The keyboard issue will be solved as we start using XInput2 and MPX.
