[Bug 221271] New: Can't configure dual-head with 1280x800 (primary) and 1680x1050 (secondary)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221271 Summary: Can't configure dual-head with 1280x800 (primary) and 1680x1050 (secondary) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: agruen@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I'm trying to configure schurl.suse.de (MacBook Intel with "Intel 945 GM" chipset) to use the integrated panel (1280x800) and an external Philips 200W (1280x1050) in Cinerama dual-head mode. I'm failing to configure a resolution above 1024x768 on the Philips display; the resolution that Sax2 displays in the test dialog is 2048x768. The mode on the integrated panel looks okay at first sight, but it might be wrong as well; hard to tell in the test picture. Any ideas how to debug / fix this? This is critical for me, as I'll be out of office for the next weeks starting on Friday morning. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The intel driver is not able to handle 1680x1050 this is not a configuration issue. In general the i810 driver needs the BIOS to operate. The bios needs to be patched to show anything useful. The BIOS doesn't contain valid timings for the 1680x1050 resolution... In short we can't fix it There will be a new Intel driver soon which doesn't rely on the BIOS I have good hope this one will fix some problems By no means is such a bug major I'm sorry -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The intel driver is not able to handle 1680x1050 this is not a configuration issue.
This is obviously not correct since I'm running this configuration on the Mac Mini (under Linux), which has the very same chipset. And so do several non-Mac notebooks, so this is not a Macintosh specific question/problem. I added an appropriate BIOS mode for 1680x1050 with 915resolution, but this didn't affect dual-head mode at all. I tried this setup under MacOS, and there I can configure this dual-head setup, so it's not a hardware limitation. So I'm asking if this is a limitation of Sax2, of the X server, or maybe of the driver. Is dual-head mode supported with different resolutions on both monitors in principle? Any chance that tweaking the xorg.conf that SaX2 generates will help? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221271 ------- Comment #3 from ms@novell.com 2006-11-15 08:51 MST ------- I thought I made myself clear. You patched the copy of your bios with a resolution information but not with timing information. our driver needs the BIOS and the timings for a 1680x1050 mode come from the BIOS as well and CAN NOT be changed. The MacOS driver of course doesn't have that problem. look at the configuration it is perfectly correct. It include the native timing information from the monitor but the driver simply can't use it. As I said before this is not a configuration issue but a driver problem - Is dual-head mode supported with different resolutions The late changes to i810 should support it yes. Matthias Hopf tested on his laptop with 1280x800 and 1024x768 in your case this doesn't help because you want 1680x1050 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
