[Bug 210942] New: zen-updater slows machine to a crawl
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210942 Summary: zen-updater slows machine to a crawl Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Zenworks AssignedTo: zlm-code10-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: aaronw@doofus.org QAContact: jtariq@novell.com The Zen Updater seems to start up regularly in the background and brings my Athlon64 3700+ system with 2GB of ram to a grinding halt while it runs for long periods of time (currently going for 10+ minutes). For one thing, since it is a background process, it should be configured to run at nice -19 and ionice -c 3 so as to have less of an impact on the running system. However, the primary problem is there is no reason it should take so long to run on my system, even though I have added the KDE repositories. Zen and Beagle are my two biggest complaints about SuSE. Both slow my system to a crawl when they run. Furthermore, they seem a large amount of memory. top - 14:13:18 up 11:46, 18 users, load average: 3.20, 3.04, 2.30 Tasks: 171 total, 2 running, 169 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 34.0% us, 65.7% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.3 Mem: 2061268k total, 2043976k used, 17292k free, 121084k buffers Swap: 4200956k total, 320k used, 4200636k free, 277800k cached 4677 aaronw 34 19 113m 29m 18m S 92.9 1.5 9:03.89 zen-updater 3448 root 15 0 491m 330m 7160 S 6.0 16.4 34:34.64 X 4018 root 15 0 18992 1160 880 S 0.3 0.1 0:04.73 iald 4447 aaronw 15 0 263m 140m 29m S 0.3 7.0 11:06.78 konqueror 4709 aaronw 34 19 175m 76m 10m S 0.3 3.8 222:50.64 beagled -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

ZenWorks is not required for SUSE to work you can always remove it. rpm -e libzypp-zmd-backend zmd zen-updater suseRegister rug (reccomended) or disable zmd rczmd off && chkconfig novell-zmd off (yes as you can see, even the init scripts are inconsistency named) that will stop eating your resources. (I clearly understand your problem beacuse I had the same issue) Yast will continue to work without issues. About beagle, I always wondered why it is included by default, we don't need it. you have two choices 1. remove beagle and kerry (reccommended) 2. as your user.. "touch ~/.dontrunbeagle" and the nexx time beagle will not start. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210942 ------- Comment #2 from aaronw@doofus.org 2006-10-08 22:55 MST ------- I have the latest versions and have all updates. Thanks for the information. I've generally been happy with SuSE, but these issues are almost enough to cause me to change distributions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
