[Bug 849692] New: poweroff spins up disks after spinning them down
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849692 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849692#c0 Summary: poweroff spins up disks after spinning them down Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cus@fazekas.hu QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 When my openSuSE 13.1 RC2 is powering off, a few seconds before the poweroff of the whole system it reaches a state when you can hear the disks spinning down. For some reason, some of the disks are starting to spin up, right before the whole system powers off. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Power off yout system (e.g.: use the /sbin/poweroff command) 2. Wait until the last step of the poweroff, when you can hear disks spinning down. 3. Hear at least one of the drives spinning up. 4. The whole system powers off. Actual Results: At least one drive starts spinning up after spinning down. Expected Results: All the drives remain in spinned down state. Does not happen with /sbin/halt. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems my system is not logging to /var/log/boot.log. Do I have to enable it somewhere?
linux /suse/werner> rpm -qf /var/log/boot.log plymouth-0.8.8_git201309032142-2.2.1.x86_64
From /usr/share/doc/packages/plymouth/README I can see
In either text or graphics mode, the boot messages are completely occluded. After the root file system is mounted read-write, the messages are dumped to /var/log/boot.log. Also, the user can see the messages at any time during boot up by hitting the escape key. interesting that this is not visible on your system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From source code of systemd I do *not* see how systemd can influence the kernels behaviour on spin up/down a disk at poweroff:
if (retries >= FINALIZE_ATTEMPTS) log_error("Too many iterations, giving up."); else log_info("Storage is finalized."); arguments[0] = NULL; arguments[1] = argv[1]; arguments[2] = NULL; execute_directory(SYSTEM_SHUTDOWN_PATH, NULL, arguments); [... initrd part skipped ...] /* The kernel will automaticall flush ATA disks and suchlike * on reboot(), but the file systems need to be synce'd * explicitly in advance. So let's do this here, but not * needlessly slow down containers. */ if (!in_container) sync(); [ ... kexec part skipped ..] reboot(cmd); only the line with YSTEM_SHUTDOWN_PATH lead .. if expanded ... to the directory /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown/ please list the content of this directory ... I guess we will find the script mdadm.shutdown but maybe there is more than this one? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

systemd maintainers
I beleive the kernel is powering off the disks when systemd calls reboot(cmd) and not sooner.
Hmmm ... this is not what you've said in comment #17 <cite> I tried commenting out the mdadm command, and the issue still happens with an empty shell script, so I don't think the mdadm command itself is the cause. On the other hand, I still have not been able to reproduce the issue with an empty systemd-shutdown directory, I will keep on trying... </cite> .. now what is the correct behaviour? If the spin down and spin up really happens even with empty systemd-shutdown directory, then this is a kernel related problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
