[Bug 433860] New: Unable to setup a printer
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433860 Summary: Unable to setup a printer Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: sdelcroix@novell.com QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- this is a collection of minor bugs all converging to a total fiasco on os11.1b2/GNOME, I tried to set up my (standard) LaserJet1200 running on a LPD/LPR mini server. The exact same setup that serve me well and always worked out of the box for the last 7 or 8 years. * no "Printer" configlet in the Control Center --> err, let's go to yast2 * Yast2>Printer: resisted to close that dialog and looked further. 2 (toplevel) options might do what I need: "Printer Configurations" or "Print Via Network"... confusing * I choose "Print via Network", "Use a Network Print Server Directly", "Connection Wizard". Again, 2 options in long list could fit my need LPD or LPR (LPD and LPR are usually handled the same way in cups) * I picked one then the other. Set the ip and queue name. clicked on "Test Connection". the test doesn't report if the test was sucessful, unsucessful or even ran * Same for the Lookup combo. "Scan for LPD" does not look to scan anything :/ "Lookup for all Hosts" is apparently not working neither... * Nevertheless, I clicked "OK" with my settings in. Back to the main ui with an extra pop up dialg "No connection selected" * Let's try the other top level Option "Printer Configurations" > "Add": the same popup "No connection selected" and again the possibility to rerun the Wizard * I then zypper install'ed gnome-cups-manager, which segfaulted, then hanged, and prtined a lot of errors to the console. zypper rm'ed it * the last chance solution was http://localhost:631. That looks familiar ! Add Printer, blah..., choose "HP LaserJet" as the maker, the only matching driver was "Laserjet1200 + Omni". That's new, what's this new omni thing ? At least, the printer was added. * still in web based cups manager->"Print Test Page": "CUPSToOmni: No pages printed!" ..epic fail... I finally managed to print a test page changing the printer make from "HP Laserjet" to "HP" and choosing the "Laserjet 1200 CUPS + gutenprint" driver -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I focus only on YaST because this is the biggest part in comment #0. Michal, I guess it is a duplicate of bug #421192. What is the current state of the "Connection Wizard"? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So the GNOME part of this bug is solved.
