You're not addressing my main point, though, which is that this removes the ability to do apples-to-apples comparisons with vmstat across different distributions. I agree with you that vmstat needs some work, and I'd be happy to work with you to find some ways to improve it. But, I'd very much prefer to see the default output be kept consistent historically.
I think we should raise this question in a wider audience. The reason why I posted the procps patch was to make the procps output easy to understand.
