[Bug 709265] New: KDE 4.7.0 Plasma Desktop running INSANELY slow
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=709265 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=709265#c0 Summary: KDE 4.7.0 Plasma Desktop running INSANELY slow Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: jmbarkei@googlemail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/534.30 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/12.0.742.122 Safari/534.30 Hello. I'm running Opensuse 11.4 on a Dell Inspiron 17R, Core i3 350 CPU, Radeon 5470 Graphics (fgrlx driver), 4 GB RAM. Since yesterday and KDE 4.6.5 everything ran smooth and fine. Then I installed KDE 4.7.0 by switching the installed KDE software from the 4.6.5 repositories to the new 4.7.0 ones. Installation worked fine and without problems. But after rebooting the system, the Plasma Desktop ran (and still runs)INSANELY slow. It took (and takes) about 15 to 20 minutes to load the Desktop after logging in, and each time several minutes until Icons, applications, and so on are displayed. The desktop (and system) is unusable like that. I even turned of desktop effects and OpelGL and switched back to xrender, without things getting much better. Looks like its only plasma that's affected by this, because applications mostly work fine internally. Today I tried switching back to KDE 4.6.5 (just the same way I did yesterday the other way round) but the problem persists. Any Idea how to solve this problem?? (Before I reinstall the whole system ... Thanks, Jay Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install KDE 4.7.0 through yast2 by "switching" package repositories from 4.6.5 to 4.7.0 2. Reboot system 3.Log in Actual Results: Plasma Desktop runs incredibly slow. Expected Results: Plasma running smoth and fine like before under KDE 4.6.5. Desktop and System become unusable like this!! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hopefully, desktop is still usable as freezes usually stands for a few seconds but it is still uncomfortable to work with... top indicates that Xorg consume more CPU than it did before upgrade... Hope this bug will soon be found... Thanks to the bug trackers ! I did some tests and I think I nailed down the problem to using an ext3 file system for the root partition. But I don't have any idea about why this should be the problem, I'm not a filesystem nor KDE expert. I tried also with Kubuntu and I obtained the same behavior. I opened a bug report on KDE's bugzilla: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282704 which is not receiving much attention right now, even if the problem is really serious (makes my desktop ~ unusable for several minutes after boot). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
