Often I also do remote network installation using VNC. This used to work until 11.4, but it doesn't in 12.1. This is what happens: In the boot screen, Main Menu, Settings, VNC enable or Disable I select: Use VNC for install? Yes Then I continue as usual until on the console appears the message: starting a VNC server.... with the list of active interfaces to which I can connect remotely with VNC. I connect with VNC, and do the usual stuff: Preparation steps Installation Mode Add-On Product Installation Clock and Time Zone Desktop Selection Disk Partitioning Etc. (in the Installation Mode screen I deselect Use Automatic Configuration, and in Installation Settings I check open SSH port and enable SSH Service) Perform Installation After the installation completes the VNC session is closed and the machine is rebooted. After reboot, the same message as before appears on the console: starting a VNC server.... with the list of active interfaces to which I can connect remotely with VNC. but this time VNC does not connect and I cannot complete the installation. In case it may help, I was able to go further in the installation process in the following way: Boot, select VNC installation and do everything as before but this time in the Installation Settings screen, instead of opening the SSH port, I disable the firewall. then Perform Installation and reboot. After the reboot, the message about the VNC server running appears and this time I'm able to connect. Then I continue with the configuration: Hostname Network Configuration (enable NetworkManager) Test Internet Connection (I select No, Skip This Test) After I click Nest, a small window appears that say YaST2 Starting service network and there it stays forever. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.In the boot screen enable VNC for remote installation 2.Perform the installation 3. Select a remote installation. Connect with VNC, and do the Preparation steps: In the Installation Settings screen select enable and open SSH service or click on Change Firewall and SSH and access the Basic Firewall and SSH Configuration screen (you don't have to select anything there, just accessing the screen is enough to trigger the bug) Perform the installation and after reboot you will not be able to connect for the 2nd stage. Also when I cannot connect with VNC for the 2nd stage, turning off the firewall does not help. Now that I know how to avoid the bug and perform a remote installation (by not enabling and opening SSH), I have encountered the other bug that I mention in my first report: After the reboot I connect with VNC for the 2nd stage configuration. I can confirm it. First, I'd assume there's a problem with firewall configuration. Lukas?
I've found out that firewall_stage1_proposal.ycp in first stage doesn't take installation over VNC into consideration at all. It's actually part of yast2-network and rewrites some parts of firewall proposal that has been created for second stage only. This newer client for first-stage proposal uses some other variables from SuSEFirewall4Network module.
