It looks like it's from the 2.4 days. openSUSE systems don't put kernel messages in /var/log/kern.log and ksymoops hasn't been needed for years. We really just need the oops from /var/log/messages from the top of the message "Oops at.." (unless something that looks relevant is before that until the end of the stack trace. In the future, things like the shell environment don't provide any useful information and can be omitted. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It may well be that the tty layer is unusable or that the file system can't be written to any more. That's one of the problems of capturing oopses to logs. Can you set up crash dumps on this server? You'll need the kdump package and yast2-kdump to configure it. It takes a small (32MB) amount of memory to load the crash kernel but instead of just trying to limp along it will capture a crash dump and reboot. During the next reboot it can perform an analysis of the crash that should include the complete oops as well as the state of the rest of the system. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581796 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581796#c9 Dan Gahlinger <cerebus_8@yahoo.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|cerebus_8@yahoo.com | --- Comment #9 from Dan Gahlinger <cerebus_8@yahoo.com> 2010-02-23 16:42:16 UTC --- well it crashed again, actually this time it was different. video was "working" (I could see the desktop on the console) however keyboard, mouse, etc non-functional. even ctl-alt-del I setup a bunch of cronjobs in and around the crash time (7:29am EST) this is the last log entry before reboot: Feb 23 07:28:01 MYSERVER /usr/sbin/cron[8454]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/copylogs
/dev/null)
this cronjob copies /var/log/messages to /tmp unfortunately that log is only a copy of that message. the kernel BUG message isn't displayed this time. from /var/log/messages: Feb 23 07:14:12 MYSERVER rsyslogd: -- MARK -- Feb 23 07:15:01 MYSERVER /usr/sbin/cron[8428]: (root) CMD (/bin/ping -c 32 199.128.1.9 > /dev/null) Feb 23 07:28:01 MYSERVER /usr/sbin/cron[8454]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/copylogs
/dev/null)
unfortunately /var/crash is empty. :( i re-enabled kdump after the reboot. interestingly (perhaps) there is a cronjob run at 7:29am every day. its a bash shell that runs an expect script that ftp's a file to another server. a single file. and that's all it does. i'll disable that cronjob and see what happens tomorrow at 7:29am -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581796 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581796#c10 --- Comment #10 from Dan Gahlinger <cerebus_8@yahoo.com> 2010-02-26 16:57:34 UTC --- it's interesting. it hasn't crashed since I disabled the cronjob. it's very weird. why a simple cronjob is crashing the ttys when the cron has nothing to do with the ttys is beyond me. the cronjob is a nightly backup, it simply runs an FTP to send 3 files to another server. that's all it does. no magic there. I have no idea why this would cause a tty pointer dereference. Any ideas?? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I go into yast, enable it, and by the time I exit, it's turned itself off, regardless of how I set it or save settings or anything. in fact, I can go into yast, enable it, cursor to the next section in kdump and cursor back and its OFF already! I can also go in, enable it, click ok, which takes me out, then go back in, and it's OFF already (again). dump on 11.2 doesn't seem to be working properly. and so far no one has any idea why an ftp would cause a tty dereference. or why, now that the ftp is disabled, why it's still happening... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
