[Bug 924538] New: usb stick not usable, very low speed
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=924538 Bug ID: 924538 Summary: usb stick not usable, very low speed Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: 13.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 13.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: kailed@kailed.net QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi, writing on usb stick is slow like a hell. Speed start at 80Mib/s but soon drop to < 10 Mib then to few Kib ! Under kde, the progress bar at some point comes to the end but I have to wait several minutes before the operation is finished. There is kworker and kio_file in D state. If I call sync, it goes to D+ state. But it's not a kde issue, it's the same if I try as root under icewm with pendrive manually mounted. Is this the well known issue with 64bit system and lots of ram ? I have 8Gib of RAM. Following some advice I've tried: echo $((16*1024*1024)) > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_background_bytes echo $((48*1024*1024)) > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_bytes and echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_background_ratio echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio Nothing. Also tried everal pendrive Everythings fine with usb HDD. I'll attach the output of: dmesg, lspci, lsusb, psaux -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

That one should be fixed in newer kernels already. Could you check with kernel from Kernel:stable repository? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Not so easy, I've some additional modules (Nvidia, Vbox, BFQ).. Now I'm building a live image with susestudio. Is a valid test from livecd system ? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

With Imagewriter I can write at reasonable speed without sync issue so it's not an hardware limit.
I didn't mean any hardware limit at all either. You should measure the *total* speed, not the temporary speed. That is, write 1GB of data with several methods, measure the whole write time to write including sync, and compare the results. If the total time differs significantly between different write methods, then something must be wrong in the transfer. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

dd bs=4M oflag=sync 1893759920 byte (1,9 GB) copiati, 442,167 s, 4,3 MB/s
That's at the low end but not really broken.
real 7m22.169s user 0m0.003s sys 0m4.392s
But with dd when is finishes IS finished with dolphin I have to wait 2 minutes where nothing happens but the copy is unfinished.
The problem is more likely with the VM. Possibly it is writing too small chunks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This looks like resolve-invalid?
Yes, it just is not bad enough. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
