[Bug 379341] New: spurious 0 characters (zero)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379341 Summary: spurious 0 characters (zero) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mrmazda@ij.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- 0 characters show up in both input and output locations with random frequency and random rate. Yesterday I had Factory up about 13 hours without noticing any, but since then and even after a few reboots with various kernels, the rate and frequency have been up and down. Sometimes the rate and frequency are so great that's it's impossible to do any useful work anywhere that keyboard input is required. Sometimes if I CAD restart it will get better at least for a while. These characters show up randomly in init output, Smart output, KDM and tty login prompts, shell prompts, the Firefox Google search box and urlbar, in Konsole sessions, mc sessions, and run command boxes, and they generate random unknown command beeps from top when it has focus. I've tried on cmdline variously maxcpus=1, nosmp, noapic, and some others. My normal cmdline options include noresume splash=off 3 vga=0x305. Replacing 0x305 with 791 and normal didn't help. It's hard to say for sure, but it seems like using nosmp or maxcpus=0 help some by reducing both rate and frequency. For a while I thought it was a cure. CPU is early Sempron running 2.0GHz on NForce2 chipset with mga video. I have in .bashrc 'kbdrate -s -r 20 -d 250'. I tried commenting that out and putting matching settings in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard, but it didn't help. In BIOS also I normally have typematic set to 20 cps and 250 delay in order to work as desired in OS/2 & DOS, but turning that off changed nothing. It started about two weeks ago. I asked about it on the mailing list starting at http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-04/msg00068.html and got no indication anyone else has seen exactly the same thing. It could be hardware, as it also happens in Mandriva 2008 Spring, but I doubt it, because it does not happen in DOS, OS/2, or several older installed distros using kernels older than 2.6.24. Biostar M7NCD Ultra desktop motherboard was "new" 18 months ago, received from Biostar as a warranty replacement. An alternate PS/2 keyboard and a USB keyboard changed nothing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

USB keyboard, I presume? (In reply to comment #6 from Jiri Kosina) Felix, what type of keyboard is that please (PS2/USB)?
(In reply to comment #0 from Felix Miata)
An alternate PS/2 keyboard and a USB keyboard changed nothing.
Total keyboards tested = 3. Reminder: no problem booted to any OS using a kernel older than 2.6.24 (e.g. openSUSE 10.2, Mandriva 2007, OS/2, DOS, etc.) (In reply to comment #6 from Jiri Kosina)
Could you provide hwinfo output?
Is that not included in the y2logs attached? After confirming the power supply is good, I took out the TV card last night, and the problem went away again. If the past is any guide, I'll need some reboots and considerable hours of uptime to see if problem comes back again. I'll also need to put the cover back on and stand it back up in case there's some detritus on the inaccessible back of the motherboard acting as an on-off switch for some kind of short. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

USB keyboard, I presume?
I have a new suspicion that this may indeed be a USB issue. System has a Soyo BayOne Extreme (05e3:0710 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 33-in-1 Card Reader): http://soyo.com/product/Flash_Media_Readers/15/BayOne_Extreme_%28black_model... What I think was happening was the media reader cartridge, which hasn't had any media in it in quite some time, was partially inserted in its dock plug, and may have had a contact tickling its mate. The cartridge bay contains a standard USB plug, so that the cartridge itself can be removed and used with a standard USB cable if needed on some other system. I don't normally keep it fully inserted, because when I try to boot OS/2 with it in, the OS/2 driver mis-assigns devices and it fails to boot. I push the eject button, to prevent that problem, but leave it in the hole for lack of any better place to keep it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
