[Bug 753574] New: booting DVD from USB-stick fails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=753574 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=753574#c0 Summary: booting DVD from USB-stick fails Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Factory Platform: All OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bwiedemann@suse.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com CC: coolo@suse.com, ms@suse.com, snwint@suse.com Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- Factory DVD isos now have a partition table that points to sector 64, but there is no filesystem at this position, which is why booting it off a USB-stick fails. It shows a "Repository not found" error. Manually selecting to boot from HDD and selecting /dev/vda works, though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In this bug, BIOS did not play a role.
correct. I said that with reference to the other bug.
possible solutions: 1) change our initrd to (also) find the iso filesystem on /dev/vda, inspite of the invalid partition
for the kiwi initrd this already applies as kiwi searches all block devices registered by the kernel for an iso header (isoinfo) with the correct id stored at image creation time. I think if Steffen will change linuxrc to also find the iso in that case the bug should be fixed
2) ask DELL for a BIOS update, so that partitions at offset 0 work
In an ideal world this could work... but back to reality I doubt it ever will happen :-)
3) have a partition table without entries, if working?
To my knowledge isohybrid doesn't allow that. 4) have a valid isofs at offset 64*512, if possible? maybe this can be done by setting up -boot-info-table but I don't think we really want that and I'm not sure about the impact of a normal CD boot -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have learned that the same issue also exists on some HP hardware, thus this issue is not isolated to one OEM. Or one product line. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This started the boot in ascii mode. I didn't know that this is possible, nice to know (especially because it has the memtest option). I can type the image name and start it. However the output is as follows: boot: openSUSE_Live_KDE ........................... 9,5 activating image: [/cdrom/openSUSE_12.1.....] 9,8 udevd: stop via control signal 11,8 udevd: still running killing it the hard way 11,8 preparing preinit phase 11,8 failed to copy utimer code 11,8 rebootException: reboot in 120sec 131,8 Failed to copy iprocs code 131,8 rebootException: reboot in 120sec 251,9 Failed to copy preinit code 251,9 rebootException: reboot in 120sec etc After this I tried the failsafe mode: boot: Failsafe_--_openSUSE_Live_KDE Could not find kernel image: Failsafe_--_openSUSE_Live_KDE Seems like a bug to me. It was possible to start the memtest > Also, is there an EFI BIOS and if so, could you try it? Dunno, might be. If I look at those 2 links: 1) http://www.logicsupply.com/products/dn2800mt 2) http://www.anewtech.net/pdf/Anewtech-ARK-2120L.pdf There is stated: 1) 8 Mb Flash with Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI PnP and 2) BIOS AMI EFI 16MB Hence I assume there is EFI...., whay do you mean with "could you try it"? I examined the BIOS settings and did not find any references to EFI, if that exists..... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
