[Bug 216052] New: openSUSE 10.2 installation on Mac mini requiring CD4
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216052 Summary: openSUSE 10.2 installation on Mac mini requiring CD4 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Macintosh OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tsuroerusu@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When installing openSUSE 10.2 Beta 1 on my PowerPC Mac mini, it wanted CD4 just to install one single package (xorg-x11-fonts-7.2-3.noarch.rpm). This is really annoying if you are not aware of it, and especially since we're only talking ONE single package. This breaks the "3-CDs for a default install" rule, and is not a very pretty surprise, since you can't tell YaST to just grab that package off the web during the moment you see that it needs CD4. I also noticed a bunch of Qt4 libraries being installed, and honestly, why install those out of the box? The typical user of SUSE is probably not a KDE hacker, and if he is, he knows how to install Qt4 himself. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Qt4 is an LSB requirement, as far as I know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216052 ------- Comment #5 from aj@novell.com 2006-10-28 09:18 MST ------- I'm confused, xorg-x11-fonts-devel is on CD4: /CD4/suse/i586/xorg-x11-fonts-devel-7.1-18.i586.rpm And the one you mention on CD1: /CD1/suse/noarch/xorg-x11-fonts-7.2-3.noarch.rpm So, did you install any additional packages or patterns? Only the default install (where you do not enter the package manager) will use 3 CDs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'm confused, xorg-x11-fonts-devel is on CD4:
./CD4/suse/i586/xorg-x11-fonts-devel-7.1-18.i586.rpm
And the one you mention on CD1: ./CD1/suse/noarch/xorg-x11-fonts-7.2-3.noarch.rpm
So, did you install any additional packages or patterns? Only the default install (where you do not enter the package manager) will use 3 CDs.
I just checked both CD1 and CD4, and the suse/noarch directory on CD1 does not contain the package "xorg-x11-fonts-7.2-3.noarch.rpm", CD4 does have it in that directory. I went back and rechecksummed the ISO that I downloaded, and it's fine. Nope, I did not even enter the package manager when I tried to do that installation I am referring to (It failed because of bootloader trouble :P ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Main target for the other architectures is: minimal=only CD1; minimal+X11=CD1+CD2. Can you please test and verify this for ppc, too? Sure, I'll look into it. There is a little problem though. I'll definitely be able to test the installation itself, to ensure that the CD requirements you specified are correct. However, unless the bug that prevents the bootloader from being installed correctly, is fixed, it's gonna be a little tough to do a 100% real-life test, because to boot the system you have to use CD1 as "bootloader" (Which is not really the same as booting the actual installed system). Last time I tried to get lilo/yaboot to work, I messed with it for like four hours with no success (I'm not an expert on bootloaders :P ). Although I promise I'll test the bootloader. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Sorry about the late reply, but school has been busting my *** lately. I have done my best to test the stuff you described, and it seems to install fine, at least it did on my Mac mini, but you never know about these [Sarcasm]superior Apple products[/Sarcasm], they might trick ya! ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
