If i change resolution to 1680x1050, resolution is still 1280x1024 after restart of the graphics system. It doesn't take effect. I never had problems with changing of resolution for this kind of monitor on openSUSE 10.3 and 11.0. I didn't have to specify the sync ranges manually.
