There is no (obvious) way to dismiss the dialog at this point, short of killing X. Of my several 11.4 GNOME machines, it only appears to be happening on my machine with an NVIDIA card running the proprietary driver. My colleague is also having the problem on a machine with NVIDIA card+driver. Both machines are also in place upgrades from 11.3 Other machines include an ATI that was freshly installed and an Intel machine that was upgraded from 11.3. I have not been able to reproduce the problem on these machines, leading me to think that Nvidia could be at play. Set g-s timeout to 1 minutes 2. Wait until g-s starts 3. move the cursor to make the dialog show 4. Wait until "Time has expired." 5. Go back to step 3 until the dialog is stuck The chance is around 1/10, and the process of gnome-screensaver-dialog will be locked in __lll_lock_wait() or __lll_lock_wait_private(). It looks like a race condition or a bug in the lower level libraries. If it fails to do so, then improperly listed locks will not be cleaned up on exit, probably **causing deadlock** or other such failure of the other threads waiting on the same locks. The strace log in comment#12 shows the dialog was locked by futex. In the beginning, I tried gtk_main_quit() in on_sigterm() to quit the main loop, but g-s-dialog still stuck in gtk_main() around 1 minute after SIGTERM was handled. It seems g-s-dialog was pending for some timeouts. The screen savers fail. I have rebooted the system, and run Yast and put on all the patches that match the software I'm running. And then I let the system be idle for a while so that the screen saver would activate (Gnome). When I attempted to get the system to come out of screensaver, the mouse would work, but the keyboard did not. There was no dialog box asking for userID/password. I tried to switch to a console and login as root. That worked once. So I killed KDE, which then caused the X11 system to restart and required me to login. Ok, so I looked for existing bugs and found this one. So I tried to get the mentioned patch to install. If it did, there is still a problem. At this point I uninstalled GNOME, and told KDE4 to use its screen saver (which may actually have been the KDE3 manager). Now everytime the screensaver launches, it crashes (SEGV). All it takes is setting the time-out to 1 minute, it crashes. Went looking for this bug, and found it. I have updated info there. Something is wrong with 11.4 and screensavers. Is this a coincidence? Is there a problem with the underlying x11? [Since I don't run any other x11 player than KDE and Gnome, I don't know the answer to that.] I will re-install Gnome at this point and retry it.
