[Bug 297546] New: PS/2 mouse not detected
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=297546 Summary: PS/2 mouse not detected Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 7 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gdoig@pcug.org.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- The ps2 mouse was not detected during or after the 10.3alpha7 install. I had to add the entry 'mouse_proto=bare irqpoll' to the boot sequence for the mouse to get detected. I would think there is are many ps2 types in use. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From /var/log/boot.msg for OpenSuSE 10.2 and 10.3.
Plug'n Play finds irq 1 and 12 in both kernels. Thanks a lot for your input. I am a little bit confused though:
Base Board Information Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation Product Name: Virtual Machine
Is this some kind of virtual machine running under microsoft windows? I have never seen such DMI identification strings on real hardware :)
Thanks.
Yes, it is. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I see. So Microsoft is emulating broken hardware :) I think that the option for you is to boot with the i8042.noloop kernel parameter, I don't think we should put work-arounds for software-emulated hardware into linux kernel, if this is OK by you.
Glenn, what is the hardware you are seeing this behavior on, please?
Thanks.
I disagree. Would a hardware manufacturer's faulty hardware be penalized too? ;) Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server have started to support SUSE by providing editions of their Virtual Machine Additions add on for non-Microsoft operating systems. They currently support SUSE 10.2. SUSE 10.3 and any other distribution using the more current kernels with this bug, will likely not be supported by Microsoft. See: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=bf12642f-77dc-4d45-ae4e-e1b05e0a2674&displaylang=en&tm Also, since the recent implementation of moving what was previously 'userspace' code for mouse support into the kernel, I for see that more of these types of problems will have to be to be addressed in 'kernelspace', whether we like it or not. I hope this will be fixed in a future kernel update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created an attachment (id=183716) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=183716) [details] Input: add MS VM to noloop list
Please try the kernel from (choose the right one for your architecture)
http://www.suse.com/~jkosina/bug-297546/
they have the attached patch applied, and let me know whether it works for you even without i8042.noloop parameter.
Thanks.
Success! Thank you very much for your patience and support. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
