I've tried recovery mode on a third machine - nVidia graphics card this time - and had no problems. Seems modesetting driver bails out in a fatal way, instead of handing over to fbdev and then vesa driver. Bug #810618 shows me that a failing modesetting driver initialization (when KMS fails due to other reasons; nomodeset is not specified at all) is also fatal with autoconfiguration, i.e. no xorg.conf has been specified.
I tried nomodeset in the boot which gets me to a garbled screen. If details are needed I can retry with that(should I add as it was initially the modestting in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install file? In another scenario I got a garbled screen but unfortunately I don't remember which one. I can reinstall and provide details if needed. Just let me know. This upstream fix is included in driver release 0.8.0. I suggest to update the driver for openSUSE 12.3.
