https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399482 Summary: Knotify issues over 581 separate window alerts due to unknown reason until ALL system Resources are used and as this Occurs System Becomes More Unstable. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer Created an attachment (id=221626) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=221626) compressed Yast log files - variety etc I had Thunderbird open, Yast and Ksnapshot open and was composing a long email. Behind me Knotify opened more and more Windows stating "?????? needs attention" When over 581 Knotify Windows had opened behind me ALL resources of System were used up. Known Issues. KlamAV was been installed and deleted, however still reports and issue on booting. Unable to identify service and terminate the cause???? I had 3 Yast windows Open, Thunderbird open in 3 windows and ksnapshot - sorry I am unable to offer more info. I attach Yast log which identifies many issues that are unknown to the user as of today's date represented in Yast as MM/DD/YYYY I am sure this is related to Thunderbird issuing an unable to connect message and this notification window if not closed will re-appear until all system resources are used. During creating of this bug, I had Thunderbird open and a message was issues behind me and as it was unanswered it caused Knotify to open up to system resources. The major issue with Thunderbird is that dialogue messages are not issues with immediate focus - for example 'enter password' for S/MIME digital certificate- and knotify messages do the same Spell check on text only screens is the first casualty of low system resources caused by massive knofity windows issues by ? and not with immediate focus. I am sure you will request other log files. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As the PC cannot always establish a connection with any name servers, because of unknown issues with Network Manager not accepting a both Static and NON-DHCP allocated DNS Servers. Because any application requires resolution of DNS, like Thunderbird and the Open Suse Updater, Knotify swings into action advising no DNS connection, however an IP is allocated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The cause was when I turn on ALL message windows and ALl error messages on ALL applications in Kcontrol. This bug will require re-assignment in both Component and Severity probably to KDE. Te possibility that Knotify has the ability to revile unlimited warnings up to system critical needs attention - Despite its cause. Leaving re-assignment to Yast Guys as the only log information can find is there. The focus of Knotify must also be looked at. Default focus for knotify is behind the active window were it will never be seen until too late -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Literally "?????? needs attention"? Thunderbird does not use KDE libraries so it is unlikely that it is directly causing many knotify popups. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To confirm, the steps to reproduce are: Configure static IP, no DHCP, invalid DNS in resolv.conf Run thunderbird - what kind of mail account is configured? Is thunderbird necessary to cause the hang? Turn on all message windows and passive windows Wait for Thunderbird to start spewing demandsattention -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Open Kcontrol>Sound and Multimedia>System notifications>Apply tick box to include ALL applications> Turn on Message Windows AND Passive Windows and Apply. 2. Next step is to force a system error message, like trying to download pop3 email and before its finished hit receive email again to elicit an error response or 'Message Window' If you do not correct an error window message, the 'Passive Window Message will continue to be generated until the system has no RAM resources left. Its the continual generation of the 'Passive Messages' that are constantly issued with the title "Condition xxxxx Demand your Attention" This bug is really a KDE Kcontrol issue and may need re-classification. You dont have to use the above POP3 process to illicit an error, and application that issues a warning message which is NOT attended to will invoke Passive Messages ever nnn seconds. The other issue is that Passive Window Messages are sent to the back of the current application screen, and never bought to focus - This is how the use can get caught in not seeing was is going on by mass 'Passive Window' production. Because we selected"All Applications" in the system notify kcontrol panel you get just that - Warning messages followed by passive window demand you attend to message window first. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Since these automatically expire and disappear, it should not be possible to generate enough to cause a problem unless a program deliberately or accidentally tries to eg: while (true) { demandAttention(); } Behaviour like that needs to be fixed at source. Just to make sure: are the 'passive windows' you refer to the borderless ones, or real dialogs that you must Ok to dismiss? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway further info the passive message windows should have the text 'nnnn Demands your Attention' where nnnn is the original Message Window that has not been acknowledged by 'OK" ing it. Passive Message Window generation should then occur, trust you are on X64 CPU just to keep baseline stable' without you seeing them as they will all be behind the application and Original Message Window...The Passive Message Generation occurs in NON Focused Windows which appear to repeat on time time initiated sequence as long as the first Message Window is NEVER Acknowledged. The First Message Window is often NOT in focus, particularly in Thunderbird which appears to have an always on top default focus. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
