[Bug 204453] New: KDE printing via CUPS fails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204453 Summary: KDE printing via CUPS fails Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: one_way@online.de QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com [Problem exists with the packages as of September 8th, but I remember having problems printing with KDE for quite some releases.] When trying to print from all KDE applications, KDE fails to get a connection to the print system / CUPS server. Any other program connecting directly to CUPS (Acroread, OpenOffice) has no such problems. The printer is also displayed correctly (and working) in YaST. "http://localhost:631" also works. I remember reading somewhere on the net about incompatibilies between KDE and recent CUPS versions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204453 jsmeix@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Component|Printing |KDE ------- Comment #1 from jsmeix@novell.com 2006-09-11 01:38 MST ------- I don't know what "the packages as of September 8th" are. Which packages (i.e. which package names)? Which package version (i.e. what does "rpm -q <package-name>" return)? Nevertheless I simply guess you use CUPS 1.2 and have the problem described here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kssingvo/unsupported/CUPS/README.txt -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was created with the intention to make the API as much compatibel as possible. But it is also known, that some KDE applications no longer work. A work-around for KDE is shown here: http://www.cups.org/newsgroups.php?gcups.general+v:24960 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Easy to work around until updated KDE packages are available: Click "System Options" at the bottom of the kprinter dialog. In the pop-up dialog choose "CUPS Server" on the left and then on the right delete the contents of the field "Host" and enter "localhost" there and in "Port" enter "631". Then click on "OK" and kprinter will work again. kprinter remembers these settings, so you do not need to repeat these steps for each printout. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also see http://www.cups.org/str.php?L1527 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is one of two KDE bugs related to CUPS 1.2: 115891 KDE doesn't work with CUPS 1.2 124157 KDEprint incorrectly uses private CUPS APIs _ipp_add and ... Basically, they've been doing things with private APIs and structures for a while now and are now getting bit by it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- and the mail from Michael Sweet in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=197490#c2 I reassign it to the KDE maintainers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204453 ------- Comment #3 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-11 11:00 MST ------- Thanks! The workaround works for me :). However, it's a bit disturbing that this problem seems to be in KDE since November last year without a fix. Concerning package versions: I think that doesn't matter anymore, as the reason for the problem has been found ;). However, I lazily thought I could spare me those as I reported the bug against a fixed release - 10.2alpha4 (post). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204453 ------- Comment #7 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-12 07:35 MST ------- Right now, after applying the workaround described in comment #1, it says: Print system: CUPS Server: localhost:631 This settings work for me! Before I had the default settings, which, as far as I remember, meant the server "/var/run/cups/cups.sock" or something like that. This didn't work. (I don't know when cups 1.2 was released, I just noticed that the original _KDE_ bug report was filed 2005-11-08) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204453 ------- Comment #9 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-14 11:36 MST ------- As the workaround works flawlessly, I'm wondering what advantages I am loosing because I use the localhost-URL and not the local file as "CUPS server"?
