So, the same situation remains on GNOME. Can't your code just use normal read/write instead of mmap? If the mmap is mandatory, a possible workaround is to reopen the PCM as "plug:default" once after this error happens. This will wrap the default setting again with plug layer. But, this shouldn't be used as the primary device because (except for pulse) "default" setup already contains the plug layer. Or, it might be better (simpler) to fix the pulse plugin setup. A user shouldn't need to configure his system to be able to hear sound when he didn't have to do that with earlier versions. The new packages for alsa and alsa-plugins-pulse for 11.0 are being built on mbuild/alsa2-tiwai-{9,15}. This contains the last fix after rc1 (maybe rc2?), and you'd need to set the env variable ALSA_CONFIG_PATH=/etc/alsa-pulse.conf to make pulse plugin as default ALSA PCM. It's set automatically in the very latest gnome-session, but it might be not set on yours. Either the signal wasn't routed through PA, or you smoked :-) The ALSA "default" PCM was overridden by PA first on RC1. It wasn't so, and thus normal dmix was before RC1 (and thus it worked only when PA doesn't play sounds). Now, PA always takes the control -- so it doesn't work any more. On RC2 and later, this won't be a problem on KDE because alsa-plugins-pulse isn't activated as default. But, on GNOME, the problem remains. Unfortunately my patch won't get into 11.0 alsa package because it's too late. That's why you don't see on any repos.
