Why not add a preload for KAddressbook/Kontact. Not everyone uses Kontact. For KDE 4 we have effectively implemented this by putting all the slow stuff into the Akonadi daemon, the apps are lightweight views onto that, so will start quickly. In fact, why don't you just leave it running on closedown, then session management will start kontact for you? What would be nice would be a way to start it with --skiptaskbar --iconify and then change those settings while running.
