I changed it such that the correct path is now set in etc/bashrc and etc/openfoam22x is removed. Hence, this works now for me correctly:
source /opt/openfoam/OpenFOAM-2.2.x/etc/bashrc
(I also pushed the same changes to the openfoam23x package).
