[Bug 851610] New: USB 3.0 external hard disk not detected
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851610 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851610#c0 Summary: USB 3.0 external hard disk not detected Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: harald.brennich@gmx.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 When openSuse 12.2 was installed, external hard disks connected via an USB 3.0 port where detected. In the course of doing upgrades, however, support for USB 3.0 somehow got lost - USB 3.0 external disk is no more detected. dmesg only shows the lines [ 7551.824183] usb 4-1: device not accepting address 4, error -22 [ 7552.328059] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 With openSuse 12.3, the USB 3.0 port works correctly. But due to other issues (mainly with resume from suspend with openSuse 12.3) for the time being I would like to stick with version 12.2 The messages are the same as for old kernel versions (in the year 2011), so it looks as if some bug fixes got lost with some kernel upgrade. The hardware is a Toshiba L755D notebook. USB 2.0 port works, but with less than half the transfer rate the USB 3.0 has when working. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Plug external disk to USB 3.0 port Actual Results: dmesg shows the lines [ 7551.824183] usb 4-1: device not accepting address 4, error -22 [ 7552.328059] hub 4-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 Expected Results: disk should be shown in lsusb and /dev/sd* Software version is 3.4.63-2.44-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 2 11:18:32 UTC 2013 (d91a619) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Note that USB 3.0 worked with some prior kernel version. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I now have tried openSUSE 13.2 with kernel version 3.16.6-2. On my notebook USB 3.0 still does not work without the patch.
OK, I see. The problem with your patch is that it triggers unconditional resets for every device and every controller. We can't have that. Could you narrow it down to the buggy devices? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

1. Meanwhile I am working with openSuse 13.2 2. Test with kernel 3.11.10-1.g4334242-vanilla gives dmesg output: [ 122.479790] SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=enp10s0 OUT= MAC= SRC=fe80:0000:0000:0000:ea9a:8fff:fe3d:c66a DST=ff02:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:00fb LEN=84 TC=0 HOPLIMIT=255 FLOWLBL=0 PROTO=UDP SPT=5353 DPT=5353 LEN=44 [ 151.428896] usb 2-1: device not accepting address 4, error -22 Device still is not shown with lsusb My current working kernel is a patched (for USB 3.0) 3.14.24
Please test this kernel https://build.opensuse.org/project/monitor?project=home%3Aoneukum%3Abnc93722... with that distro. And please comment on bnc#937226 Can I take this to mean that you can no longer test for this bug? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
