[Bug 850779] New: Missing USB ID for Ericsson H5321gw prevents use of 3G modem
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=850779 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=850779#c0 Summary: Missing USB ID for Ericsson H5321gw prevents use of 3G modem Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tsuroerusu@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- The Ericsson H5321gw 3G modem has a USB ID of 1926, which is not prevent in ModemManager's database in openSUSE 13.1, and thus I cannot use the 3G modem in my ThinkPad X230. Other folks on the web seem to have the same issues on other distributions. An identical bug report can be found here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/1057956 There is also a patch to add the revision, I tried applying it manually to the udev rules, although NetworkManager still greys out the "Mobile Broadband" tab for whatever reason. In any case, this modem is likely present in many other laptops, I would hope a patch for this could be issued ASAP, as it could well be an unpleasant surprise for people on the road. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please check Bug 850675 again for a workaround (at least for me).
I have now tried it, and unfortunately, it makes no difference. NetworkManager still does not recognize the 3G modem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The device refuses to answer every question about supported networks. Please retry with a SIM card inserted.
Unfortunately, I do not have a SIM card to try with at the moment. However, the other day I put in an openSUSE 12.3 KDE LiveCD to test if the modem worked with that, and here the NetworkManager applet did in indeed show the mobile broadband options. And I have a T420 ThinkPad with a similar 3G modem, and it at least shows mobile broadband configuration options. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What the applet shows and what works are different questions. mmcli does recognize the card. We need to rule out a GUI issue. A test under 13.1 with a SIM card is necessary. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just realized that I could try using my phone's SIM card, so I stuck it into my X230, and speak of the devil, low and behold the mobile broadband options now show in the GUI. I tried to see if I could use the phone's 3G access on my laptop, and IT WORKED! So what we have here, in my humble opinion, is a situation where the GUI is a bit misleading, because it led me to conclude that the 3G modem did not work with NetworkManager in 13.1. If instead it had shown me the mobile broadband options, and if I then mistakenly had tried to connect with no SIM card it would simply have failed, and I would probably eventually have checked the SIM card and went "DOH!". I have attached logs above, of me connecting to the 3G wireless, and doing a light bit of surfing on Google, and then disconnecting. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, I agree. But that is an issue with GNOME. Please take it up with the GNOMEs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Actually, would it not be KDE given that it is KNetworkManager doing this? I have not tested this with GNOME at all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, yes, but it is a GUI issue in any case.
Agreed. :) Thanks for helping out squaring this issue, I was baffled by it myself, but also a good female friend of mine depended on it, so I appreciate it. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
