(WLAN-Router: FritzBOX 7170, WPA1) - should be fixed. If you can enter umlauts they should be supported. In that case it depends on used encoding how to interpret each character and NM can't make any assumption on which encoding the AP is using. So it can't work with non-broadcast SSIDs.
