[Bug 637717] New: sometimes wireless network does not work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=637717 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=637717#c0 Summary: sometimes wireless network does not work Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fedev@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100723 SUSE/3.6.8-1.3 Firefox/3.6.8 Sometimes, when I switch on my laptop (Aspire 4520) the wireless activity indicator would blink (showing that the wireless adapter is on and that there is some sort of activity going on). At this point, running: iwlist wlan0 scan returns no scan results, the problem is that the networks are there. If I then press the wireless button, and run the same command again it will return the actual list of available networks (at this point the blinking indicator, while still blinking, looks somewhat as if the light was stronger. Does this make any sense?). Some other times, pressing the button does not make a difference and I'm forced to run the command: rfkill unblock all As it would show that soft block was on. ----------------------------- Linux zeus.olympus 2.6.34-12-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-06-29 02:39:08 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ----------------------------- The same error happens on both x86 and x86_64. I'll post more details if I can get some. Please let me know if you need more details about any particular package version. iwlist wlan0 scan returns no scan results.
Just a remark. When you run the "iwlist scan" as a user you'll receive cashed results only. To trigger the scan you have to run the command as a root.
If I then press the wireless button, and run the same command again it will return the actual list of available networks Some other times, pressing the button does not make a difference and I'm forced to run the command: rfkill unblock all
It would be good to see the output of the command "rfkill list all" when you can not connect. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On a normal startup, iwlist wlan0 scan will find no wireless networks and rfkill will display the following:
rfkill list 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no
"iwlist wlan0 scan" shall be run when the adapter is UP.
Nevetheless, the wireless light blinks showing activity (this did not happen on 11.2). Pressing the wireless button will make the wireless work.
What adapter is it ? Would it be possible to post the output of "hwinfo --wlan" ?
Earlier, if I tried to bring up the device instead of pressing the wireless button, like by doing: ip link set wlan0 up I'd get soft blocked yes or some times both yes.
It would be better to use either NetworkManager or ifup/ifdown to bring the adapter UP/DOWN instead of using "ip link set wlan0 up". This can be configured it yast2 network settings. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"iwlist wlan0 scan" shall be run when the adapter is UP.
While "iwlist wlan0 scan" will list only if the adapter is UP with 11.3 it will make the wireless indicator blink as if the interface was up thus making you believe it is. Also, I believe before the command was indicatibg if the interface was down rather than saying no results, am I correct? I can't surely recall but I'm surprised if it didn't indicate it. As it is, the light indicator will blink as if the adapter was up and then it returns no results.
What adapter is it ? Would it be possible to post the output of "hwinfo --wlan" ? I'll post this information later on.
It would be better to use either NetworkManager or ifup/ifdown to bring the adapter UP/DOWN instead of using "ip link set wlan0 up". This can be configured it yast2 network settings.
I've been using ip link since 10.3 I think and never gave me a problem. I'll try with ifup and post the results. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

zeus:/ # ifup wlan0 Network interface is managed by the NetworkManager -> skipping
Would it be possible to switch to ifup/ifdown in yast2 network settings ?
zeus:/ # iwlist wlan0 scan wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
The interface can not scan when down. Try to bring it up with ifup, ifconfig or ip .

In this screenshot you can see that networkmanager shows no network connection while on the previous screenshot you can see that networkmanager shows the adapter as enabled.
It would be really good to switch to ifup/ifdown and test again. The simpler the configuration the better to isolate the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I posted this because earlier, if you noticed, iwlist wlan0 scan will return "no scan results" until I pressed the wireless switch (after the laptop was first switched on) but after trying to bring the interface up with ifup it returns that the interface is down. So why is it returning "no scan results" in the first place? Is the interface up but not working because of another problem? Is it down but iwlist doesn't realize it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is possible that the adapter is UP but the radio (antenna) if OFF. But I'd like to know if you can scan and connect with ifup now ? If not, would it be possible to post the output of "ifconfig -a". "rfkill list all", "iwlist scan" and "ifup wlan0" ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

# rfkill list all 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes
The WLAN KEY is off
#Pressing the wireless switch didn't do anything at this point, rfkill unblock all also didn't help.
# rfkill list all 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no
Actually here the adapter shall be working, because both Soft and Hard switch is unblocked. Maybe the adapter needs more time to get ready.
# rfkill list all 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no
I'm confused. What software blocked the adapter ?
# rfkill unblock all #only at this point the real scan results showed up on iwlist
Yes, the rfkill now can unblock the Soft switch. Would it be possible to find the exact conjunction between WLAN KEY and the state of the rfkill intefaces ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This seems to be an ath5k driver problem then. I haven't found this bug reported on [1]. More information about ath5k can be found here [2] and in the chapter 12. " # Reported bugs on ath5k" you can find links to ath5k related bugs in [1]. Would it be possible to report the details from Comment #19 to [1] ? The ath5k developers are listening there.
