[Bug 246494] New: initrd does not support resume from EVMS
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246494 Summary: initrd does not support resume from EVMS Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: hare@novell.com, behlert@novell.com, pavel@novell.com, fseidel@novell.com OtherBugsDependingO 245732 nThis: in the initrd, resume is invoked before the evms is set up. Thus we can never resume from swap on an evms swapdevice. The attached patch fixes mkinitrd for me, but it needs more qualified judgement :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246494 ------- Comment #1 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-16 14:29 MST ------- Created an attachment (id=119756) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=119756&action=view) fix for mkinitrd the "if [ -n $resume_minor ]" is an obvious typo, $resume_minor appears only once in the whole script. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246494 ------- Comment #2 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-16 15:12 MST ------- The patch is incorrect. It resumes, but before it resumes it already does something to the ext3 filesystem, as the console messages show... working on it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The current EVMS hack in mkinitrd requires you to mount the filesystem to figure out whether there are devices which should be excluded from the EVMS setup. And this is exactly what you can't do when trying to do a resume. So I fear that resume from EVMS is a no-no for 10.3. If someone really cares he should do a feature request for it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246494 ------- Comment #13 from olh@novell.com 2007-02-28 05:19 MST ------- mkinitrd should include the /table_file into the initrd. If resume= is found in /proc/cmdline, use the built-in copy. If no resume= is found in /proc/cmdline, poke at /etc/fstab on the root filesystem to see wether there were any configuration changes. That leaves the question why resume= is put into every single cmdline out there. Perhaps a if (product != SLES) append_to_cmdline(resume); somewhere in the bootloader related parts of yast2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That leaves the question why resume= is put into every single cmdline out there.
Because you cannot resume without it?
Perhaps a if (product != SLES) append_to_cmdline(resume); somewhere in the bootloader related parts of yast2.
Then intel with their thousands of SLES on Thinkpads cannot resume anymore. suspend to disk is not a !SLES feature. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

A lot of people with 'normal' old-style desktops :) also use suspend. comment 13: Two years ago it was explicitely required to have servers be able to suspend and resume. We here in the laptop divison do not question the sense of such requests, but assume that there are valid reasons for that. comment 15: Thomas, I think you are involved because of the warning message mentioned by AJ in comment 10. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
