Every item is rightly restored by resizing the panel by a pixel (right-click, then properties). This problem occurs on every login from the Live-CD (I have not yet checked on a default install though). The applet icons appear after I uncheck and re-check the "expand" option in gnome panel properties. Compiz might be involved.
