[Bug 461226] New: Desktop icons are gone
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461226 Summary: Desktop icons are gone Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: digulla@hepe.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- All my desktop icons are missing. The directory is still there and the files as well but KDE4 doesn't display them anymore. I tried KDE4 a few months ago on openSUSE 11.0 but it was too unstable and I switched back to KDE3. Maybe there is some dirt left which confuses KDE4. Any ideas where I should look? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This kind of Alzheimer desease is a bad habit of kde4 as shipped with openSUSE 11.1 that AFAIK does not exist in openSUSE 11.0 (+updates from kde4-repository), a bunch of related comments showed on the mailing list opensuse-de recently. So this must be some kind of regression IMHO. Today I updated to the stable repository what improved things - it does not forget the settings every time but still every other time. Is there any single file that is responsible for that and that could be marked read only in order to force kde4 to keep it's settings? I did the very same as Aaron did because as is now kde4 is hardly usuable. By the way, another option is to delete the kde4-directory, but this prolongs login time significantly and the entire desktop configuration gets lost. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've opened a new bug 462844 for that. I can't confirm comment #2 since I always hibernate and rarely reboot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There are no files going away, rather an incomplete plasma-appletrc as Plasma doesn't write its config out completetly after initial setup/changes before it crashes cause by some user interaction or logout. There are other bug reports complaining about this.
which reminds me I should have created a backup of the file which might have allowed you to figure a way to determine that it is corrupt.
Yeah, that would have been a good idea. Can't figure out much here anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
