This time under VirtualBox 2.0.2 on another system (AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ system running a 32bit Linux host). Logging in takes again around 38s. And this is a standard "blank" installation. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=428123 User pwu@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=428123#c9 Peng Wu <pwu@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |pwu@novell.com --- Comment #9 from Peng Wu <pwu@novell.com> 2008-10-24 02:21:01 MDT --- I suspects the following components causing the problems, 1. gdm contributes > 10s, in /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow, there contains eight gnome applications, which will be launched by gdm on login window. The problem here is that the gdm login window will launch nearly a entire gnome session, which contributes several seconds to gdm start. And when normal user login, all gnome apps belongs to gdm user first will quit, while the login user's gnome-session will wait for the eights programs of user gdm quiting, after that the login user's gnome-session will starts. This process will greatly slow down the user login. After remove all apps excepts gdm-simple-greeter.desktop, the gdm start reduces < 7s, login process reduces to near 12s. The gdm GUI will become ugly, maybe some modification on gtkrc will be helpful. (Note: with the following packages removed.) 2. pulse audio contributes nearly 12s to login process. using zypper to remove all pulse audio, which will auto install esound-daemon, reduces 12s. 3. compiz contributes nearly 8s to login process. using zypper to remove all compiz package, reduces 8s. PS: The differences from a blank installation, just for your information, not important. the hp-systray in gnome-session using libqt4, so I just disable it for not loading libqt4. And also remove system-config-printer, which is from fedora, there already has yast2 printer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In my system, the login time is about 30s. 1. compiz (10 seconds) When I use metacity as the default window manager, the login time will cut down effectively. 2. pulseaudio (3 or 4 seconds) 3. sometimes, the gvfs backend will cost about 2 or 3 seconds. 4. gconfd (2 seconds) gdm and the login user will both call gnome-session, so the gconfd will be shutdown once, the second time gconfd start, it cost about 2 seconds. 5. xrdb (4s) I don't know if we can call it less times in the gdm Login scripts. In my strace log, it will be called more than 2 times and it will cost 2 seconds some times. 6. scim-launcher (4s) In my locale, the scim-laucher with some special packages will spend about 4 or more seconds, but it may not happen in others' system. After I change the compiz to metacity, close some automount gvfsbackend(remote-volume-monitors), close the pulseaudio and remove some of my scim packages. The login time was now in 8 seconds. gnome-panel and nautilus seems very fast compared to all the programs above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
