It exhibited this problem, in one fashion or another, all the way back to 10.3. I can't, of course, rule out some sort of funky design issue with this series of laptops, but it does work fine with Ubuntu and Fedora, so I submit there is some difference in the device probing/sizing at this stage of the installation that's worth scrutiny.
