[Bug 586066] New: Speed up start-up time of OpenOffice.org by tinkering with the memory settings
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586066 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586066#c0 Summary: Speed up start-up time of OpenOffice.org by tinkering with the memory settings Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: OpenOffice.org AssignedTo: bnc-team-ooo@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pBakhuis@Gmail.com QAContact: cwei@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.0) Gecko/20100115 SUSE/3.6.0-1.2 Firefox/3.6 The memory settings described on: http://www.ghacks.net/2007/08/18/speed-up-open-office/ * Number of Steps: 30 * Use for Open Office: 128 * Memory per Object: 20 * Number of Objects: 20 Greatly speed up the startup time of openoffice compared to the default settings, I think these should be used by default if the system has at least a certain amount of memory. (768MB?) Reduced the startup time for me personally from 6 seconds or so to about 2. On a side note, Preventing it from using the JRE makes the startup time comparable to that of MS Office, but at the cost of functionality... so that's probably not something that should be done by default. Since generally the trend is for faster machines with more and more memory I don't see there will be a great rush to implement such a feature :-) But... the settings mentioned there in the link also seem a little strange since they seem to allocate more memory than at least a ooo-build version of openoffice Object size from 5.2 MB to 20 MB? how that affects start up time beats me ( although in the past I remember on solaris there was a trick of allocating a a pile of memory on start up and then immediately deleting it which supposedly pushed out the process envelope size which allowed subsequent memory requests to be happen faster ) also the link says to enable the quickstarter, do you do that? if so that would explain your faster start up time ( but only of course after the first startup ) do you have the quickstarter enabled? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just changed those settings and prevented it from using the JRE. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It might be an easy win if it really works. Well, I am not sure if we could set it by default. It might cause a headache for people with less RAM. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

openoffice Object size from 5.2 MB to 20 MB? perhaps is offset by Number of Steps: 30 which is to do with undoable history ( would be interesting to see exactly where these settings are used and how they might affect startup ) I wouldn't be surprised if there is some hack in there worked well for 16 bit windows systems but is now detrimental in modern systems ( it wouldn't be the first time that sort of thing has happened in openoffice )

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586066 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586066#c5 Jan Holesovsky <kendy@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID --- Comment #5 from Jan Holesovsky <kendy@novell.com> 2010-03-15 17:12:14 UTC --- So of course, when you start OOo for the first time, it is a cold start - it takes considerably longer to start than the warm start later (as the page says "Click OK and restart Open Office to see how fast it is now. That’s really a difference."). You can try it - just revert the settings back, restart OOo, and you'll see that it will stay very fast :-) If you rebooted after your tweaking of the settings, you'd get the same startup speed (slowness) as before. Wrt. the JRE, you are probably right, but as you say, it is not a good idea to turn it of by default. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
