After inserting and booting from (downloaded) openSUSE 11.0 DVD the installed openSUSE 10.2 cannot be booted because there is a new "image"-file in /boot and therefore lilo does not func. anymore. Install-DVD should not overwrite existings files until User had told to do so!
1) insert DVD 2) "reboot" 10.2 3) change BIOS to boot first from DVD 4) [reboots autom. again because of changed BIOS-settings] 5) DVD starts with new image-Screen (2 or 3 christmas penguins) 6) I did not change the selected menu-item so that the first item "boot from hd" was started automatically after default-timeout 7) [may be a black screen with 1 or 2 lines messages appears] 8) the new images-Screen was shown but only the static graphics, no moving penguins, no menu items 9) system is dead: no reaction on any key (arrows, return) or ctrl+alt+del 10) power off / on: booting until the new image-Screen, then like # 8) + 9) To repair I started an emergency-system from 10.2-CD and found that the file /boot/image was newer then /boot/map. Only a new install of lilo does not work (dead like above), I had to edit lilo.conf to comment out the line "image..." and then reinstall lilo again, then system boots with simpler text menu and runs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm fully lost at what you describe. I'm not aware we ever had a file /boot/image in any SuSE release. And the DVD 'boot from harddisk' option doesn't write anything to disk.
So, what you describe above, basically, is that after selecting the 'boot from hd' option on the 11.0 DVD, your system gets unbootable?
That's no the Live-DVD, btw?
no, not Live-DVD, download openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso + burn I did not press any key after booting from DVD so the first menu item 'boot from hd' was selected by default and started autom. after default timeout and at this moment (or right after it) the wrong image-file was on hd and so lilo could not handle this. (lilo was installed many weeks before with another image-file and cannot work with a new one without re-install). (Could it be that the 11.0 not care about lilo or grub [I believe that grub has no problems with new image-files]?) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do you have more than one harddisk?
++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ First I have to apologize about my confusion (must come from my angry about the extra work for me to repair the system). There is of course no file with name "image", the name ist "message"! I must be confused about the file contains pictures/graphics - which are images too. The bug has nothing to do with the common use of image as kernel-image, but with the image-content of the "message"-file. The modified line in /etc/lilo.conf is (of course) "message=/boot/message". (The entry ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ # boot = /dev/sda vga = normal read-only menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg lba32 prompt timeout = 80 # optional # message = /boot/message image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.10-default label = LinuxV2 append = " resume=/dev/sdb2 splash=silent showopts" initrd = /boot/initrd-2.6.18.8-0.10-default root = /dev/sdb1 #image = /linux7/boot/vmlinuz # label = Linux7_2 # root = /dev/sda1 # initrd = /linux7/boot/initrd # append = " scsihosts=sym53c8xx:aic7xxx " ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ ++++++ The master boot record is on another hd then the kernel (lilo is also telling this when install with /sbin/lilo), but this no problem. ** SORRY, SORRY ** +++++++ Yes, there are 2 scsi-hardisks.
