https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215626 Summary: snd_hda_intel sound driver loading fail and stop booting in first start, after fully finished installation Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: zreizinger@hdsnet.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Acer 5102 laptop, similar bug: 140238. I tried install 10.2 Beta1, after some work on 10.1 with failed alsa and kernel source. The 10.2 beta1 installed sucessfully, first login with working sound system. After reboot I get messeages : <4>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:212: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff <4>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:212: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff <7>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:590: hda-intel: get_response timeout: IRS=0x0 and hang booting process. After hard reset I started again with safe settings, but deleted all options. System started and sound system working. part of boot.msg: Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.18.1-7-default Loaded 23925 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.6.18.1-7-default. It's often a problem of ACPI or broken BIOS. Try to boot once with a boot option pci=noacpi or acpi=off. If it doesn't help, the driver won't work very likely in the development frame of SUSE 10.2, unfortunately. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215626 ------- Comment #6 from aarmstrong@mma.edu 2006-11-07 17:55 MST ------- Compiling ALSA 1.0.13 from source and installing the drivers corrects one error message: <snip> <7>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:590: hda-intel: get_response timeout: IRS=0x0 <snap> The other error remains, but the line number in hda_codec.c changes to 215: (Original error) <snip> <4>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:212: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff <snap> (New error. Note the path is where it was compiled.) <snip> <4>ALSA /home/alex/Desktop/alsa-driver-1.0.13/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:215: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff <snap> Looking at the hda_codec.c file shows that the error comes from a function that is looking for connections. And that's as far as I've gone into ALSA, so I will defer to someone who knows more about the Linux sound system. If I can provide more info let me know. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215626 tiwai@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Blocker |Major ------- Comment #7 from tiwai@novell.com 2006-11-08 04:10 MST ------- The audio of Acer laptops are not supported by 2.6.18.x kernel, at least. It _might_ work with the very latest ALSA version (from HG repo). Try to get and build ALSA driver (alsa-kernel + alsa-driver) from HG repository. See the download page of www.alsa-project.org. If the driver still doesn't work, try to add model=acer to "options snd-hda-intel" line in /etc/modprobe.d/sound. (This model doesn't exist in 2.6.18 kernel, only in the newer ALSA drivers.) Anyway, changed the severity to MAJOR because this is a device-specific issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215626 ------- Comment #9 from aarmstrong@mma.edu 2006-11-17 14:04 MST ------- The bug still exists in Beta 2 but is less sever. I've found the boot error messages cut out quicker than in Beta 1, and both Kaffeine and Amarok can play music (though Kaffeine will only start as root). No recording yet. I can compile the modules from the HG repo. but I may be missing a step when installing them. I use the hgcompile scrip and it builds the modules fine. Then to install is use: earth$ make modules-install And here's where I get a bit confused. I will use modprobe to load the new modules and then run YaST to set up the sound card. Things seem to go well, but after restarting I only have mono sound. I've used alsaconf with similar results. Also, I still get the errors during boot. For the moment though, the default install is usable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
