[Bug 252583] New: displaced pages when printing with Brother HL 5150D
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 Summary: displaced pages when printing with Brother HL 5150D Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: danielstefanmader@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Printing with KDE apps on a Brother HL5150D does not work properly since the pages (A4) are displaced, i.e. the printing area is starting way too far on the top of the page. Using e.g. acroread it works nice so I assume some weird handling of KDE applications. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Acroread possibly does not even use CUPS for printing. Does the printing test in YAST work properly? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #2 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-03-15 08:59 MST ------- I will check other non-KDE apps asap! I think they do all print alright, when I remember correctly. Also the CUPS test-page comes out perfectly well! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #3 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-03-16 03:20 MST ------- Printing with OpenOffice.org works fine, with FireFox it doesn't. Maybe it helps that this has been exactly the same with 9.3 and 10.1 (10.0 I have never used). Also, the result is identical with two different computers. Other printers connected to those work nice, though, so maybe it is some error in the respective PPD-file? (Sorry, I am not experienced at all with printing issues.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

How does lp -d <queue-name> /usr/share/YaST2/data/printer/testpg.ps print? Is it placed correctly? How does echo "Hello" | a2ps -1 -M a4 -o- | lp -d <queue-name> versus echo "Hello" | a2ps -1 -M letter -o- | lp -d <queue-name> print? Is it placed correctly for "a4" but with "letter" it looks like what you described in comment #0? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #5 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-03-16 04:39 MST ------- By the way: Regarding comment #1 "Acroread possibly does not even use CUPS for printing.": All printing is done via CUPS because CUPS is the printing system, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell Only commands like echo -en "\rHello\r\f" >/dev/lp0 do not use CUPS but send data directly to a device file where a printer is connected to. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So definitely no: this is a wrong format but it does NOT look like the result described in comment #0 since that one has a cut off top of a page! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #8 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-03-19 04:46 MST ------- The default media options in the PPD are all set to "A4" therefore the PPD settings look o.k. for me and according to comment #7 correct input prints correct (your results with "-M letter" are exactly the same for me using a HP LaserJet 1220 PostScript printer). I.e. the printing system works o.k. and it is the applications (i.e. KDE and Firefox) which send wrong input to the printing system which then prints wrong. To test what KDE and Firefox send to the printing system, print into a (PostScript) file from them and attach those files to this bug. By the way: Do the same problems happen also for a new created test user? I.e. is there perhaps some old page size config setting in the home directory of the user for which it doesn't print correct? Additionally check the stuff in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Print_Settings_with_CUPS For your interest, have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=148707#c1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #9 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-03-22 02:11 MST ------- Hello, sorry it took so long. I have been trying to print documents to PS or PDF files: they all look OK, nothing cut off, no pages displaced. Maybe we have a profane problem here: the printer has a duplexer unit. This thing accounts for the fact that I cannot use ipp for printing: the YAST/CUPS-testpage comes out OK, but as soon as some application sends to the printer it complains about wrong paper sizes... (A4 is of course set alright). How are those units handled? Even when the Duplex printing option is set to none it still seems it causes erroneous paper input of the printer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #11 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-03-22 07:43 MST ------- I don't need the YaST test page (I have it too on my machine) and in comment #7 you wrote that it prints fine for you. I need a real document (preferably only one page) which prints wrong for you from whatever KDE application and Firefox and I need the PostScript output from exactly this document from exactly the KDE application and Firefox where iot does not print o.k. for you. I don't know how the duplex unit in your printer works. Ask the manufacturer of this printer how the duplex unit is supposed to work in this model. To verify if it is caused by the duplex unit, remove it from the printer and test again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=252583 ------- Comment #12 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-03-24 07:38 MST ------- Hi, there is a misunderstanding, I think: the attached files are the ps2pdfed YAST test page *and* the results when printing that file with KDPF. They do look perfectly similar without any misplacement to me! The duplex unit of that printer is integrated by default. It seems to me that the printer pulls in the paper in a wrong way due to that duplex unit even when the printer settings in e.g. KPDF are set to no double-sided printing. I am evaluating that with a friend of mine. It seems very likely that the page-format alone (A4) is not sufficient but a second option page region is needed. There is no option for that in both YAST and KControl to set that. The only way is lpoption, it seems. Maybe this is a required enhancement... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The PPD in attachment #125185 is a original PPD from Brother. There is nothing we can do here. We can neither fix their PPD nor the PostScript ("BR-Script3") interpreter in their printer. All you can do is ask Brother. For background information see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Information_for_Printer_Manufacturers_Regarding_L...
