[Bug 561101] New: Hibernation report - MSI MS-7516 board - nv crash
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561101 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561101#c0 Summary: Hibernation report - MSI MS-7516 board - nv crash Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I've got a new desktop machine which doesn't hibernate out of the box (oS 11.2): bombadillo:~ # s2ram -i This machine can be identified by: sys_vendor = "MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD" sys_product = "MS-7516" sys_version = "1.0" bios_version = "V1.5" SMOLT profile: pub_48ea7e31-b8d3-4dc0-b3bf-49401155e07f This machine hibernates and recovers fine in runlevel 3. However, in runlevel 5, it crashes if X is active with open driver nv, even if left in text mode with graphics in background. Ie, it hibernates just fine, it recovers fine too, apparently, to text mode, but as soon as I press ctrl-alt-f7 the keyboard locks (no LED response). Sshing from another computer I see that xorg is at 100% cpu (one core). Killing it (9, because 15 is ignored) does not unlock the machine. Black screen. I have to reboot it. However, if I install the closed source nvidia driver (the easiest installation of all time, thanks): x11-video-nvidiaG02-190.42-9.1.i586 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-190.42_2.6.31.5_0.1-8.2.i586 and, provided I switch to a text console where I issue pm-hibernate (with "powersave -U" I had some failures), then recovery succeeds. I type then ctrl-alt-f7 returning to my fully opened desktop, which works fine. I have been doing this procedure for a week. It pains me having to use the closed source driver full time. Please figure out first if you can find a s2ram setting which works for you.
Thanks.
Refuses: machine is unknown. The quirk I need is unloading graphics mode. Not available, AFAIK. I have added a script to /etc/pm/sleep.d/ to switch to text mode (chvt 1), which might work for the closed source nvidia driver. Not tested yet (I'm afraid to loose work in progress atm). Stefan, this report is for hibernation. The S2ram quirks won't help here, because it's not the problem of getting the display backlight back.
I didn't say anything about the backlight, this machine is a desktop with a real CRT display (at the moment). I think that is listed in the SMOLT report cited in #0. The problem is that a) with the nv driver loaded, it locks X. b) with nvidia driver it only works in text mode. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Needs reset. But as this is a desktop, it doesn't worry me. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you follow the howto on en.opensuse.org?
Certainly not, that page is obsolete. For starters, there is no xorg.conf file, so I don't know where I would apply any of those settings, i would have to create the sections. Then, it is designed for SuSE 10.0, not openSUSE 11.2... If you have a concrete setting you want me to try, tell me which, and how do I apply it, and I will. Uncomment of lines with chvt in /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions should be a workaround. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Indeed, this worked. I called "pm-hibernate" on an xterm, and I got back to the graphics console successfully. On the other hand, the script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ did not; it run, but machine fails to restore correctly. I'll remove this line. I changed these lines in "functions": take_suspend_lock() ... chvt 63 .. remove_suspend_lock() ... chvt 1 chvt $VT -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
