[Bug 506721] New: Skip network check doesn't work.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=506721 Summary: Skip network check doesn't work. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bitdealer@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I'm not sure when that crap started but at least since 11.1 the installer asks me if I would like to test my internet connection by downloading the latest release notes and updates and although I always select "NO, do NOT try to connect anywhere" it still tries over and over and naturally fails if no network is available. This behavior annoys the heck out of me over and over again! As in, regardless if I have a working network atm or not, IF I choose "Don't touch my internet connection" I expect & want it to respect my decision and not to do what it wants. Further it's a total waste of time which I simply would like to be able to avoid once again. So please fix that check. Last verified with build 0106. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When "No, Skip This Test" option is selected on "Test Internet Connection" screen, online repositories are added and refreshed. If there is no internet connection available, results can vary from single pop-up ("couldn't resolve host") to multiple pop-ups with very long delays between them (tcp timeouts), depending on network configuration. I suggest to add and refresh online repositories only when internet connection test is successful (if test is skipped or failed, repos could be added and disabled) or split "No, Skip This Test" option to "I am sure this computer is connected to the Internet" and "This computer is not connected to the Internet". Attachment containt installation logs. Installation was performed inside VirtualBox virtual machine, VM network set to "internal network" with no other VMs in it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I tell it not to try connect to anywhere I want it to respect that regardless if it could connect or not. Also this worked just fine until 11.1. The reason I set it on Critical is that 1. The behavior is the 100% opposite of an intentional user decision which simply should never ever happen. 2. It is totally annoying. 3. It leaves a very bad first impression. 4. In default network proposal it's first connected device configured with dhcp. In case of not dhcp response, there's fallback address (some 168.x.x.x or something similar) In other words, there is always at least one IP configured. If I say "Don't test my internet connection" it kinda implies that I don't want to download the updates during installation either (also that is done automatically anyways after one boots into the installed system so I really don't see a reason one _has_ to do that during installation). Could we therefore please simply revert to the pre 11.1 behavior - as in if I select "Don't test my connection" simply don't connect to anywhere to download anything. I allways thought that ICT is the first step of adding updates repo. You could add something like "If this test is successfull, online repositories will be added and refreshed. You can skip the test and add repositories later with YaST" to connection test dialog. Also, what will happen, if DSL connection is configured on network setup page? Will it survive the end of connection test? Re #10, I agree with Stephan Kleine and prefer no popup at all, but if you decide to implement that popup, please show it only if ICT is skipped. If test fails there won't be internet connection to refresh repos. Re #8, how can user skip the online update? The only way I found is to press "Abort" button on progress bar dialog, and it is unresponsive sometimes. Refresh is started immediately and "Skip autorefresh" button at the bottom is disabled. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And I selected NO and it is still wasting time to download some standard repos, their metadata and what not and thereby wasting 5+ minutes just to fail with some network crap that wasn't valid in the first place. My point simply is: If I select "Do NOT try to contact anyone via Internet for whatever reason!" I do NOT want it to try to connect to download anything! Can we please get that fixed finally? IOW all I ever want here is that it does not waste my time and tries to connect to $somewhere if I tell it not to connect to $anywhere but simply move on with the installation since there isn't a single reason why it has to download anything - last but not least it just worked fine before someone introduced that bug for 11.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In business installation, or frequent installations, we mainly use a local mirror to install oss, non-oss. And this mirror has also frequently the update. Now installer, add oss, non-oss, update, debug and sources repo pointing to download.opensuse.org. What that mean : you finally get 2 repo (active and refresh) pointing to oss You force admins to re-edit all repos after the install : just count the number of clic needed for that in yast = just pain in a... You doesn't allow us to insert what repo we want to use at install time. autoyast, kiwi image etc are solutions, but why over complicate things and make them non standard : we can add several repo at the start of install, and then we can't modify or edit live what the installer propose. As the code to edit repo already exist, my proposal would be : after the network test ( yes or skipped ), add repo like you think they should be ( actual process ) but open the repo editor, so admin can in one screen adjust directly their need. then if they modify the location of oss, non-oss, update whatever, on the screen for update, they will be launched from the right place. saving time to everybody, and bandwidth too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Even if you don't want to test your network connection, the system still tries continually. This is a problem if you don't actually have the computer connected to the network at the time, as it will wait indefinitely until you manually tell it to abort. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
