Highly surprisingly just running: lpr /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps prints out the cups test page without problems: it fits the page snugly with no obvious cropping problems. I have an Epson Stylus DX 6050, using the DX4800 driver (which worked in the past I believe under SLED10). It looks indeed a letter/a4 problem, although not sure. Test page in A4 works great here, although on a totally different printer.
