[Bug 685068] New: Asrock 870 Extreme Mainboard: Freezes when HPET enabled
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=685068 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=685068#c0 Summary: Asrock 870 Extreme Mainboard: Freezes when HPET enabled Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bugzilla@go4more.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de-DE) AppleWebKit/533.3 (KHTML, like Gecko) rekonq Safari/533.3 I don't know if there is a way to handle this in the openSUSE or if it should be dealt with in the upstream kernel: Like obviously many other mainboards, the Asrock 870 Extreme mainboard has problems when the HPET-timer is enabled (logfiles spammed with "CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to ..." messages). For the user this is visible in frequent shorter and longer complete freezes, IMHO especially during I/O activities. Using the "hpet=disable" kernel option or turning HPET off in the BIOS seems to solve the problem for me. I don't know if there is some blacklist or something where this mainboard should be listed. The problem occurs both with the 11.4 stock kernel and the current Tumbleweed-kernel (2.6.38-18, desktop flavor). The mainboard BIOS is current. I also use the proprietary AMD/ATI-driver. Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(A bit strange, as I read the output that in both cases "hpet" is not even used.) Strange enough, it's best reproducible during KDE4 startup: This works flawless without hpet, with hpet there is a ca. 20 sec. freeze. The freezes also occur when the desktop is up. Without being able to prove it I think it's during heavy load/heavy I/O-situations. I now run the tumbleweed variant of openSUSE. I have the feeling that the freezes occur less frequently. There is also a warning in the boot messages concerning "TCObase" which seems to be different with the different BIOS settings concerning hpet. Just don't have it at hand right now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You would expect the computer getting slow with this workload, however, it's not only getting slow, it gets completely frozen, does no longer react to any keypress (only magic sysreq) and often has to be restarted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This way we can hopefully get some upstream kernel developers to look at it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Here the "hpet"-problem does not occur. Seems to be a BIOS issue.
