[Bug 206956] New: Find a place to host NVIDIA/ATI kmp (+video) packages
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206956 Summary: Find a place to host NVIDIA/ATI kmp (+video) packages Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party AssignedTo: aj@novell.com ReportedBy: sndirsch@novell.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com CC: adrian@novell.com, michl@novell.com The good news here is that we already have a solution for openSUSE 10.1 (after SLE10 has been released). Due to the common (kernel) code base you can use the packages for SLE10 hosted by ATI/NVIDIA also for openSUSE 10.1. And now the bad one. Since ATI/NVIDIA is concerned about needing to support drivers, which are hosted by them, it is *very* unlikely, that they will host RPMs for non-SLE product, because of the big driver matrix (n * openSUSE) X (o * driver_version) X (p * kernel_release) Therefore I suggest to host the RPMs for openSUSE > 10.1 on another server. packman might be a candidate for this. I've set this to critical, since the question, if we'll provide ATI/NVIDIA driver packages also for openSUSE > 10.1 comes quite often on the openSUSE mailing lists. It's nice to see we have these packages available for internal use, but it's even better to see a solution for our customers. If hosted e.g. at Packman, it would be totally unsupported and "use at your own risk" anyway. But it would be really helpful if you could provide us with some help to do the KMP (as I presume you know how the folks at nVidia do it). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206956 ------- Comment #11 from dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com 2006-09-21 03:26 MST ------- I had some contact with nVidia a few days ago for this matter. And they are not willing to host the packages if they're not coming from Novell direct. Probably there is some scaryness about abuse behind. What would be about the Packman and/or Guru repos? Could this be an alternative? I guess Novell would not like somebody building them in the BS :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206956 ------- Comment #12 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-09-21 03:56 MST ------- #11 Well, If the guys in Nürnberg were to build the packages they would be coming directly from Novell - the exact same thing as the current situation with the SLED KMPs. So if coming directly from Novell is the only issue - then all we need is for SUSE to take on the responsibility of building them and sending them to the vendors. Of course I don't expect the vendors to host KMPs some n00b built. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206956 ------- Comment #14 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-09-21 04:08 MST ------- Maybe it's just me. But to me "releasing KMPs" and "building KMPs" are two different matters. Not entirely sure which AJ meant. In my scenario - much like the current SLE scenario - SUSE would do the building and the vendors would do the releasing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I guess Novell would not like somebody building them in the BS :-) Please, no, no, never do this! Unfortunately it's not possible to build only the Source RPMs. Otherwise I've done this a long time ago.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206956 ------- Comment #23 from martin.schlander@gmail.com 2006-11-01 17:17 MST ------- Sounds great. One thing though. Let's not forget about that other huge vendor, ATi. True, most die hard Linux users have Nvidia, but many n00bs switching over have ATi, and on top of that the ATi driver is a bit tricky to install and set up. So having KMPs for ATi hosted is just as important, and potentially a very important selling point for openSUSE.. as if we need one the way 10.2 is shaping up. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
