Some else was. Somehow he was running a 32 bit kernel. I can't explain how, because all he had was a 64 bit LiveCD with KDE4 that I gave him. I've seen the output of uname --all, it was i686. When I've done the installation myself everything was running as expected, x86_64 everywhere. If he does that very fast, it will run konsole 32 bit.
