Alpha3plus, this is 2.6.25-rc8.
in my case even a vanilla 2.6.25-rc8-git7, no suse patches.
If it's _DOS, everyone in this bug should also mention what kind of graphics card and X driver he is running. Not sure, but switching from X to console could help? If yes, please also state this.

i have now echo'ed 1 into /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS and will try during the weekend how it works out. Right now it looks promising, but then it did not crash always even with 0... So 1.if use the default _DOS value, the laptop panics when closing the lid. 2.if override the _DOS to 1, the laptop works well. 3.if clear _DOS after step 2, the laptop still works, right? Could you please attach the acpidump output?

Yes, setting _DOS to 1 worked quite well over the weekend (the machine did not crash and i did deliberately close and open the lid quite often). I did not dare resetting _DOS to 0. Is this worth trying? No. I asked the question because I didn't understand "Right now it looks

I wonder whether acpi_osi="!Windows 2006" helps. A lot BIOSes differ in IGD device or video related devices between Vista and !Vista...
I tried that. It did not crash immediately. But i could not do long time tests since brightness adjustment did no longer work. So i went back to no boot parameter and DOS=1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It did not crash immediately What does that mean? This all (especially the strange oops messages: at different places and totally unrelated to Lid/ACPI code), looks like a hardware problem. Is F.0A the latest BIOS? If not an update would be the first step.
Also the latest 2.5.25 stable kernel should be used (or kotd), maybe there still was a little bug in rcX? If this is easy to reproduce, I'd also try an older kernel, maybe SLE10? This is all digging in the dark, decide yourself what you think is worth it... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It did not crash immediately What does that mean?
"It did not crash, but after 5 minutes i rebooted without this option, since the machine was half useless without brightness control etc." So this might "fix" the bug, but probably "acpi=off" also "fixes" the bug. Still it is not acceptable.
Also the latest 2.5.25 stable kernel should be used (or kotd), maybe there still was a little bug in rcX?
I am always running the latest STABLE code. With DOS=1 the machine is rock solid and stable.
If this is easy to reproduce, I'd also try an older kernel, maybe SLE10?
Yes it is, ask coolo :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

uname -r and use the VERSION string (without -default) here: rpm -qp --changelog kernel-default-VERSION.rpm |head -30 I mean..., just be sure you match the rpm and the running kernel version. Maybe you could do the same with the the kernel version you are sure which did not work. Then we should have the dates when things got fixed in between...

I think it was at least the version that ships on the final openSUSE 11.0 DVD.

Interesting... if I attempt to start gnome, closing/reopenning the lid kills the backlight. It works okay in console or in icewm session.

please attach the output of "cat /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS" # cat /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS DOS setting: <0>
could you please verify if "maxcpus=1" can also workaround this problem? As I wrote in comment #61, I can no longer reproduce this problem... so how can I test a workaround then?
