[Bug 851720] New: Outdated version of SANE in this new distribution
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c0 Summary: Outdated version of SANE in this new distribution Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: philip@pjtait.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/31.0.1650.57 Safari/537.36 My shiny new Fujitsu ix500 was not found by scanimage -L. I found that 13.1 includes version 1.0.23 from 15 months ago, whereas the current version, 1.0.24, released earlier this year, does support more, newer scanners. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Plug in ix500 scanner 2.Run scanimage -L Actual Results: No scanner found. Expected Results: device `fujitsu:ScanSnap iX500:121789' is a FUJITSU ScanSnap iX500 scanner I assume that the 1.0.24 release of sane-backends was too late for the freeze deadline. However, this is an example of a package where it is very desirable to keep it current, so that openSUSE supports recent hardware without undue trouble for the user. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c1 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Platform|x86-64 |All CC| |jsmeix@suse.com Found By|--- |Community User Resolution| |INVALID --- Comment #1 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> 2013-11-22 10:03:58 CET --- The current version 1.0.24 was released on Tue Oct 1 2013, see http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-announce/2013/000033.html At that date openSUSE 13.1 was already in "Feature and version freeze for the complete DVD", see http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2013-09-19: Beta 1 => Full Feature Freeze only major and critical bug fixes allowed Text freeze for translations Feature and version freeze for the complete DVD (patchlevel updates of leaf packages possible until RC1+) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Therefore in openSUSE 13.1 we provide the topmost up-to-date version of sane-backends that was available at SANE upstream at that time when openSUSE 13.1 package versions were frozen. For next openSUSE version we will - as usual - do our best to provide the topmost up-to-date version of sane-backends that will be available at SANE upstream before the time when openSUSE package versions will be frozen. Take into account that a package version upgrade needs some time so that we can only provide what was released at SANE upstream several days before openSUSE package versions will be frozen. Therefore the issue report is invalid. FYI: When time permits I will provide the current version 1.0.24 of sane-backends in its openSUSE build service development project "graphics" wherefrom you can - on your own risk - download and install it. "When time permits" means "when I am not blocked with work for our SUSE Linux Enterprise customers". If you are impatient, you may think about to contribute the current version 1.0.24 of sane-backends to openSUSE, see http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Development in particular for contributing software packages see http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Packaging -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c2 --- Comment #2 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> 2013-12-03 16:41:29 CET --- sane-backends version 1.0.24 is now available for various openSUSE versions for 32-bit i586 and 64-bit x86_64 platforms from the openSUSE build service develoment project "graphics" for direct binary RPM download from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/graphics/ Do not use "Factory" if your system is not "Factory". Use the matching packages for your particular system. The packages in the "graphics" development project are only for testing, without any guarantee or warranty, and without any support. As an extreme example, this means if your complete computer center crashes because of those packages, it is only your problem. On the other hand this does not mean that those packages are known to be terrible broken but they are not thoroughly tested so that any unexpected issue can happen. Regarding the current support status of the "Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500": It is listed in the sane-backends 1.0.24 source file doc/descriptions/fujitsu.desc as follows (lng line wrapped here): ----------------------------------------------------------------------- :model "ScanSnap iX500" :interface "USB WiFi" :status :good :usbid "0x04c5" "0x132b" :comment "small, current, WiFi not supported. Hardware only scans in color. Backend generates binary and grayscale modes." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I.e. do not expect too much. Philip Tait, I assume you are a venturous openSUSE user who likes to try out if sane-backends version 1.0.24 from the OBS "graphics" development project actually works for your scanner model (I cannot test it because I do not have such a scanner model). In this case please report whether or not it works for you (you can add comments to this bug regardless that it is closed as "invalid" - i.e. there is no need to reopen it only to provide feedback). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c3 --- Comment #3 from Philip Tait <philip@pjtait.org> 2013-12-04 03:15:21 UTC --- Summary: successful tests I updated the 13.1 system I had been using with sane-backends 1.0.24 (built from source), with the version in OBS Graphics. It continued to work fine. I then updated a fresh installation of 13.1 on another computer, and this also worked correctly. Incidentally, I get clear images of black and white text, at a rapid scan rate, so the backend is doing a good job in these modes. It is very usable with this scanner. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The URL is 'http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/13.1/ports/' which does not exist. I unchecked this repository, and then the installation completed, but the scanner is not found by sane-find-scanner . How do I report this breakage? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=851720#c6 --- Comment #6 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> 2014-08-01 10:44:30 CEST --- A fresh installation of what exactly? Because you mentioned an URL with "openSUSE:/13.1" I assume you did a fresh installation of openSUSE 13.1. I don't know what the "ports" repository is. On http://download.opensuse.org/repositories I only found http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Ports:/ i.e. "Ports" not "ports" but that only contains http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Ports:/ARM:/ and I assume you did not do a fresh installation of openSUSE 13.1 on ARM architecture. On my openSUSE 13.1 (an installation from June 2014) I have those standard respositories: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- # zypper lr -u | cut -s -d'|' -f6 URI cd:///?devices=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-QEMU_DVD-ROM_QM00003,/dev/sr0 http://download.opensuse.org/debug/distribution/13.1/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/debug/update/13.1/ http://download.opensuse.org/debug/update/13.1-non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.1/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.1/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/source/distribution/13.1/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/13.1/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/13.1-non-oss/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To install sane-backends version 1.0.24 see comment#2 (i.e. get it from the develoment project "graphics"). If your fresh installation of openSUSE 13.1 has by default an invalid repository, then please report this as a new separated bug, see http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports ------------------------------------------------------------------------- When reporting a bug, please use one report for each defect you want to report. Using a single bug report to address several problems at once is really not a good idea because it makes it difficult to track the progress on each item. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Furthermore having separated issues in separated bug reports is a precondition to handle the issues independently because different issues usually require different people to get them analyzed and resolved. For example in this particular case here there is nothing what I can do regarding issues with respositories. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
