Summary: Very slow upload speeds with iwl3945 driver Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: victorrz@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: ---
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-2.5 Firefox/3.0.5
Upload speeds are around 50-80KB/s with downloads speeds approx 1MB/s on the iwl3945 wireless connection to a 54G router running WPA2. Windows XP upload and download rates are equal at around 1MB/s.
This behavior seems similar to the bug report in this thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/288948

--- Comment #1 from Maurice de Bijl maurice@debijl.net 2009-01-18 11:58:20 MST --- Same problems here, I encountered these problems during a review of a wireless router. I described my problems here (Dutch):
http://www.ruwebit.net/article/320
Translation (English): http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.ruwebit.net/article/320%2... Translation (German): http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.ruwebit.net/article/320%2...
See the table with the red entries.
Some conclusions: The problem occurs with 802.11g (2.4 GHz). The problem doesn't occur with 802.11a (thus 5.0 GHz). The problem only affects upload speed, not download speed (up is under 1 MB/s, down is like 3.1 MB/s) The problem doesn't occur under Windows Vista. The problem doesn't occur using a Broadcom mini-PCI I used scp for testing
I tested with an Acer Extensa 5220 laptop (Google for specs) with OpenSUSE 11.1 64-bit, the Windows Vista laptop I used for testing is an Acer Extensa 5260 with the same 3945ABG mini-PCI.

--- Comment #4 from Maurice de Bijl maurice@debijl.net 2009-03-02 01:44:02 MST --- I will test it this evening (CET). Is it just a matter of installing the RPMs for the kernel?
By the way, will this kernel be submitted to the standard OpenSUSE 11.1 repositories, so it will become available trough an update?

Yes.

If it fixes anything, then yes, indeed :).

Because you didn't reply long enough (it's resolved as no-response). After you provide the info if it helps or not, reopen it of course.

--- Comment #9 from Maurice de Bijl maurice@debijl.net 2009-03-02 11:33:41 MST --- I however tried the kernel that came through the regular update (2.6.27.19-3.2-default). And it made no difference with the previous one (2.6.27.7-9-default):
/home/maurice # scp /tmp/debian-40r5-i386-netinst.iso root@10.0.0.104:/tmp/ debian-40r5-i386-netinst.iso 100% 162MB 3.2MB/s 00:51 /home/maurice # scp /tmp/debian-40r5-i386-netinst.iso root@10.0.0.104:/tmp/ debian-40r5-i386-netinst.iso 100% 162MB 1.1MB/s 02:31
Top one is on 802.11a (5.8 GHz), lower one is on 802.11g (2.4 GHz).

This won't help me much. Could you retry get the labs kernel? If it doesn't work, I'll move it somewhere else.
